    Why's it dead around here?

OK. Time to try to kick up some discussion...

Why is it dead around here? I'm away a couple days and see there's been no new posts! I'm rather dumbfounded. So is it:

    - Vudu is too much fun to bother with forums?
    - Vudu is too easy and I don't need support forums?
    - You guys are all just paid Vudu hacks so why bother?
    - Vudu sux?
    - There's nothing to talk about?

What can we do different here to generate a better and bigger user community on line? I'm open to suggestions?

Re: Why's it dead around here?

As far as this 'dead' forum goes I'm in the 'no news is good news' camp. VuDu fills a perfect gap in my movie watching habits and, most importantly of all, it just works. So long as they keep adding titles I'm a happy camper. I just wish their marketing team would ramp up the visibility of this unit; as an evangelist I've showed it off to many friends and all are impressed, however they all have an existing DVD collection (something I never invested in) and are happy with Netflix (which I introduced to most of them back in the stone age). Tough nut to crack for the VuDu marketing think tank. What I can tell you is that porn is not the answer and VuDu should keep, but bury, that feature in the basement. No guy (gal?) with a family in their right mind would watch porn in their own living room - I mean did they only do the focus groups in Haight-Ashbury or something?

Anyways it's a good product and hopefully that shakeup (apparently linked to the deciscion to offer porn because of the timing, IMHO) gets VuDu more and more visibility in their niche market.

Keep up the good work team VuDu.

I don't think the porn thing should be viewed as any sort of embarassment for Vudu. I mean if I scroll through the the movies available on DirecTVs PPV channels, what do I see? Porn channels. It didn't take any activation on my part to see that so they don't seem to need to "bury it in the basement".

I think the reality is that there are many "closet" porn watchers that watch it when they are able to (kids away, in a separate den/office, in the bedroom with their spouse, etc.). Having it on Vudu just allows Vudu to make money on something that is already a lucrative market. Given that you have to go to the web site to activate it, I think they managed the "family oriented" issue quite well.

Two unrelated things. Overall the AVN Adult Channel has been well received and was in response to customer requests and the ability to deliver it in a way that worked for both those that we interested in it as well as those who prefer not to consume it.

The shakeup was nothing more than a not uncommon but still unfortunate fact of business as some strategy was changed as happens. It's just something that happens from time to time.

And for the record, we don't think that convenient movie viewing is a niche market

Re: Why's it dead around here?

I've been wondering the same thing actually. I check this forum daily and it rarely has any posts anymore.

I wrote it off as a good thing. No bugs to discuss and no major complaints.

On the flip side of this argument I think another potential reason is that there's nothing new to talk about. Vudu seems to have nailed down the primary purpose of a rental box but they still have a lot of meat left on the bone when it comes to marketing a box that can serve as a personal media library - whether that be in the form of physical storage, streaming capabilities, etc.

So until there's some indication that something new (major - not minor releases that are mainly transparent to the user) is coming then I wouldn't expect much discussion.

On the restructuring press release topic - to me, a lot of people took a fairly insignificant event and blew it out of proportion. It seemed very reasonable to me to see a start-up company re-align it's resources to better position itself to move on to the next level. That's a fairly normal event in a company life cycle.

I've wondered the same thing -- I don't post because there are no other posts, lol.

With regards to latest VUDU news, I'm surprised that we didn't hear anything about the features that were -- as I understood -- supposed to be announced at CEDIA. CEPro interview mentioned more HD titles, HD over component video and some other things.

Anyway, I guess, we are all just bidding our time until VUDU announces something new. They know what we want -- external storage, more HD content, more TV shows, HD over component, better UI for TV shows, movie purchases through the web, playback of user media (media extender functionality), etc.

Hopefully, the quiet is the calm before the storm - many new features, etc.

Good to hear people are liking the box and all and feel it works well. Come to think of it, probably at least 50 to 75 percent of the posts at SlingCommunity are from people who are having problems of one shape or another. I know I get tired of explaining how to do port forwards and avoid a double NAT to people who can't figure out how to configure a router.

The rest of the forum is generally people complaining about this or that. So yeah, maybe our silence is golden!

I knew it was too quiet around here!!! By the way, feel free to share some of that salmon over here to Houston. It looks like Ike is going to hit us pretty hard, so any humanitarian aid is welcome

                        So Rusdude -

You OK man? My bro lives in Beaumont and I called him on Thursday to see if he was planning to get out of Dodge. He was already on a business trip in Wyoming last week. He had planned to come back through Dallas and then go off to Ohio this week. He decided he'd just change his plans and go directly from Wyoming to Ohio.

Beaumont looks like it got hit pretty good too...

I just came back to work today. Actually, let me rephrase that -- we were allowed to come back to work just today (roof damage on our office building). I don't think I've ever been this excited about coming to work though -- there's still no power at my place and it's been ten days. Aside from all the usual inconveniences of not having power, Houston isn't exactly a kind of place you can live without A/C (high-80s now and it's considered "cool").

And oh, a bunch of my rentals expired as well as a couple of movies in progress. But at this point, it's not really on the top of my priorities, lol
