              To all

VuDu is great, but if you can't muscle the studios to let you rent rather than buy, I don't thing you'll succeed

Ok now we are up to 2 purchase only votes. I understand that some folks just don't want to collect DVD's or the physical media. Its an interesting position to take.

I would buy Movies only after an external drive becomes available.

So, when the Bourne movies go on sale for "$0.00" on Friday, you're going to stick to your guns and not purchase them?

Why not? The box can hold approximately 50 purchased movies in its current state..

If you are thinking this way because you are planning on transporting the external drive around and using it with a computer, for example, it probably wouldn't work that way. Tivo just came out with support for external epansion drives and they do it in a way that every single thing that gets recorded is partially recorded on each drive. I believe that was intended to ease concerns about piracy, since nobody could take a drive and have any way of extracting a movie off of it. I would guess Vudu would need to do the same thing.

The Vudu files are all encrypted so you wouldn't be able to read them anyhow...

Couldn't you still get them if you could break the encryption? If only half of the movie is on the disk, it would be impossible to unencrypt. I was just guessing based on the Tivo expansion support. They go out of their way to tell you that each recording is split over both drives. They don't just say that it may be.

I don't know what has been publicly stated about how it will work so I don't know what I can say (and I don't know much about the details of the external drive feature), but I doubt the drive format is going to be in NTFS or similar and yeah, you could break the encryption code but that would take a lot of work and as soon as Vudu found out, they'd probably plug the hole...
