    Information about movie availability
In order to provide the widest possible selection of movies, VUDU offers movies from a large number of studios, including all of the major Hollywood studios as well as many independent studios. Because each studio specifies when their movies are available to rent or to own, not all movies are available on the same schedule. For many new releases, the movie will be available to own on VUDU on the same day that the DVD is available to buy in stores, and it will be available to rent on VUDU a few weeks later.

Since Evan Almighty is not for rent I have to rent it from Netflicks. I'm glad I did not cancel my membership just yet.

It's frustrating not to get the latest movies to rent immediately when they're out on DVD - but it seems that there are more recent movies coming online... it's getting better.... now as soon as we bet subtitles\cc I'll be real happy!

Will someone please explain the marketing concept that anyone would want to own a movie only available for viewing on the VUDU box? The prices are not even competitive with Best Buy. When you factor in owning a DVD with extras, platform viewing flexibility (player or computer), I think offering films for purchase is a waste of time. Even my twelve year old daughter gets it.

The frustration is that new releases are often available only for purchase, not rent. That is a hugh issue with me and negative talking point with friends & co-workers about VUDU. Just make every movie available for rent. That and get new releases out on Tuesday like other rental services.

The picture is great. Sound is very good. Navigation is pretty good with the cheesy remote (sorry, not a fan). It's the rental problems that will make VUDU a success or sink the concept.

I agree with you completely about the rent vs buying concept. I was looking at the number of people who entered in the poll to rent vs buy and wondered why there are onlly 25 people who voted. The idea behind the poll was so that the Vudu company could see where most of their profit would come from besides the purchase the box. I would also suggest another poll to determine how many owners are voting because only 25 votes does not make a good case for renting.

I can't see the decision makers putting much weight in this one. For starters, they have the real results (i.e. what the owners are actually doing) which is a much better indication of consumer preference vs. the opinions of the forum folks. Besides, we have no way of discriminating the votes of legitimate Vudu customers (and potential customers) from the grouches and lurkers who don't want Vudu to succeed. As for profit from the actual STB sales, I think they are going to be lucky to break even on the hardware over time. The real money is in the rental/purchase revenues.

I would agree about renting only, but I purchased a Clifford movie for my daughter because she will watch it over and over. A few of us with kids have said that those are probably the only movies we would buy on the VUDU, just to have something new for the kid(s) on very short notice.

Re: What's New on VUDU October 30, 2007

Prices on Vudu are not that different compared to in the stores unless the movies have gone into the discount bin. For example SpiderMan 3 is 19.99 at BestBuy and on Vudu. Sure, the BB DVD has all the extras but how many people really watch that stuff? Other than a few things on my LOTR DVDs, I've never watched all the extras in any movie I own (which isn't many).

Second, there is a lot of content on Vudu that you might not find anywhere else - Indie films - For example there's a pretty good one called "Brothers on Holy Ground" that was done by a firefighter from 9/11. I don't know if you'll find that many other places. Or like Max said, Kids movies. I WANT to buy Piglets Big Movie on Vudu as my daughter has already had me rent it twice. BUt it's rental only! There's also a number of music concerts, etc. that would be nice to just have when the impulse strikes you. That's the thing - IMPULSE...

I agree though that the box is going to be primarily a rental device and that ALL content should be available to both rent AND purchase...

VUDU will not succeed if the public can't rent mainstream new releases at Blockbuster store prices, every Tuesday - and soon. The indie thing is nice, but not a big draw. Obscure B & D movies won't bring the public to VUDU. There is a lot of junk movies on the VUDU box.

                      http://solution.allthingsd.com/category/vudu/

The VUDU movie rental pricing seems to fluctuate from 99 cents to $4.99. That ain't the Blockbuster rental $3.99 model. Whoever is writing these studio agreements needs to think rental first, consistent rental pricing across studios, then purchase.

You may want to look at this thread and poll....most of the votes in the poll think the selection is good.

                        http://forum.vudu.com/showthread.php?t=1898

There have been many posts classifying the types of movie renters out there.

Some just want the hottest releases,
Some just want to browse the aisles of the video store and rent something that looks interesting

I think of the VUDU as browsing the video store at this time. It will take time for the studios get a better understanding of the electronic distribution model.

I don't care about consistent pricing. I like the fact that some of the older, less in demand movies are priced lower. It makes perfect sense to me.

Why does one need consistent rental pricing? I think Blockbuster has different pricing for different movies. Maybe I'm wrong - it's been SOOO long since I've been to one.

Anyhow, why would Vudu want to follow the Blockbuster model? Vudu is a different concept aimed at putting Bluckbuster in the dustbin of history...
