Digital to disc? Backup copies of movies purchased?

I am fairly new to this service and like it so far, but I have a simple question. What if I lose my job and lose internet? Do I lose access to the movies I have bought here? Is there a backup copy I can make on disc from this service? Before I "invest" and pay the premium (14.99 for an online HDX copy of a movie that I can have in blu-ray format for 9.99) I would like to know if this is something available or will be available. I would hate to put a lot of money into my "library" then lose it because something happens that makes me have to cut back and lose it. Thanks.

    Hello insanityfan,

Vudu is strictly a video STREAMING service, therefore you cannot "backup" or "burn" your movies if you lose access to the internet.

Yes, with certain devices you can download a digital copy for viewing of VUDU titles. In the future you will also be able to do the same with UltraViolet.

An actual Blu-Ray will always be able to be played on almost any blu-ray player so it's in a way less risky and as you've said cheaper in many places, plus you can sell it for cash unlike digital copies.

That said technology is going to change, you've replace that VHS with LaserDisc with DVD Blu-Ray with 3D Blu-Ray with 4k??? so it's all moot at some point.

OK thanks for replies I am happy to see that I can download my purchases at least and can watch them with a viewer. Another dumb question.. is the vudu viewer proprietary, or if they go belly up, can I watch my movies with another viewer, say Quicktime or another DVD type viewing application? I just want to make sure my "investment" is protected. Thanks.

You can only use Vudu-To-Go to view downloaded movies from Vudu.

As our friendly Vudu rep said...Vudu downloads are currently proprietary. Once the Common File Format (CFF) is released from UV, and PC/Mac based player programs are added, the UV titles will be fully back-up-able (I should probably coin that word). Research "Ultraviolet CFF" for more info.
