    Already owned movie collection

How long until I can rip the DVDs I already own to th VUDU box?

    #2
    Re: Already owned movie collection

That is unknown. The Vudu has the potential to be the hub of a great media center. We have asked for this before and while I think that in the long term scheme of things, Vudu wants to support this, there are a lot of other items that are higher priority to the mission of the Vudu.

The main purpose of the box is to allow rental and purchase of video content over the net. Vudu is doing everything they can to make this the best possible medium for VOD. It is their sole and number one priority. They have a lot of things on their plate to continue with improvements: HD Content, Improvements to the User Interface, Support for TCP/IP control, possible support for IR control, etc.

Some time in the future, I am sure your DVD collection will be available via your Vudu. I hope it comes soon, but I would rather have them perfect the VOD experience first.

I'd have to say, that really is a good suggestion.
I have other methods for viewing my movie collection throughout my house, but my interface isn't as slick as Vudu's.

I think Vudu could excel in this area if they created a device that could stream movies off a server in your house. The device wouldn't even need a hard drive. Just instead of pointing towards servers on the internet, you could point towards a movie collection ripped on your server(s).

Yeah, there are products like that now, but again vudu's interface would be killer.

Now if they combined that with downloads - even better.

Actually, what I'd like to see is the ability to play content fetched from the network. Then you could run a media server and play the content on the VUDU. More flexible that way, too.

I use Windows Media Center on a box running Vista, and an Xbox 360 as a media extender. My interface is nice using Movie Collectorz as a plug in for media center. let me know if you want to see a sreen capture of this, it is very nice, with browse by title or covers. with a full description of each movie.

For you guys who have ripped your DVDs to your own servers, what format did you store them in? I have done it and I used X Software's Video Vault product to just copy the mpg file to my Terastations. It's nice because it's fast, since no transformation is done, but it takes up a lot of space (3 to 6 GB per movie) It will only get worse (much worse) with HD DVD. That's why I want to get out of owning movies all together. I'd rather just pay for every viewing of every movie we ever watch, as long as I can do it on demand. If I had been able to do that, I would have been way ahead cost wise from my current solution. If Vudu can make it happen I will be thrilled.

So far I've only ripped (from purchased DVDs, of course) to my ReplayTV by doing a manual record, then I can watch it from any other Replay in the house, and both of our TVs have Replays attached. This creates an MPEG-4 file and a couple of associated files that contain metadata. Sometimes I'll move it over to the dedicated media server, which runs DVArchive, a free program that can emulate a Replay on the network and serve shows.

Eventually, I'd like to set something up like you have, where the whole DVD, including special features, resides on the server, although then I guess I'd need a HTPC for each TV.

that was gonna be my next post.

I copy the video_ts directory, resulting in lots of space on my server. Sure, disks are cheap, but when you're dumping 400 dvds, that's still a LOT of disk space.

I'm interested in doing some type of compression, provided quality is still excellent on a large (119") screen, and I retain full 5.1 audio.

I run a sage server, with extenders at every TV. As stated, i'm also interested in how you ripped the movies. My interface is nice enough, but more importantly it's 100% consistent with the TV watching interface, so i'm not in a huge hurry to change that. But I would like to rip smaller file sizes.

                    Re: Already owned movie collection

Don't forget to always factor in the cost of the spinning HD's when looking at the storage solution. My current NAS has 4 drives drawing about 80 watts of power 24x7. I'd prefer to have someone else host my content if I had the bandwidth to download and view/listen on demand over the internet.

That is one reason I like the VUDU and can't wait for the studios/record execs to catch up with the model. With the right bandwidth someone else takes on the headache of maintaining the delivery and storage of my owned content.

Exactly! I have 4 NAS boxes, so that is 16 drives. I would have no reason to own the movies at all if I could play them on demand from Vudu.

                            Sorry about the late response.
I use DVD Shrink, in order to keep the quality high, I only copy the Main Movie. I dump all trailers, menus, extras, languages ect. If I want to see any of that stuff I just put the DVD in and watch it. but meanwhile I have access to over 400 dvd's (Movie Only) right on my tv. To get it to work around the house, I just have to add more Media extenders.
There is a setting in the DVD shrink menu where you want to remove the checkmark where it says, create 1gb chunks for Vob files. this will create one large Vob file. then all you have to do is rename the extension from Vob to mpg. nice I'll come back here later and post a screen shot of my interface.

oh by the way even though I compress the movies I would say the quality is comparable to what you see on Vudu
