    Difference between SD and HD

    Hey all, sort of new here. Was wondering the difference between the SD and HD movies. Is buying HD worth it or will SD work just fine for picture? I don't have anything fancy for a laptop and don't own a tablet/smartphone.

    SD = 480p resolution
    HD = 720p resolution
    HDX = 1080p resolution

    It makes a big difference to me and I don't hardly ever buy SD but will occasionally get an HD because that's all Vudu has. I have a 92 inch screen so I do notice the difference. Those with much smaller screens may not?

      Agreed, you will probably not notice much difference on a laptop screen, however, if you are purchasing I'd recommend going HDX. This is especially the case for Action movies and animated films, not always worth it to me on Comedy and Drama. Think SD=DVD : HDX=Blu-Ray : HD=inbetween, and consider if you may eventually be using a home-theater setup or larger screen. If you're just renting, I'd stick with SD on a laptop or tablet.

        If you are buying the content (vs renting) remember that you will own it on VUDU (and possibly UV) forever, so eventually you may end up wanting to watch it on a large TV (or high-res laptop/tablet/etc). And also note that as far as I know HD and HDX purchases are almost always the same price (rentals are often $1) so go for HDX over HD in that case.

        In general, if you want to see what the difference is for yourself, you can try out the first 2 minutes of any movie in whichever resolution you want - try picking a movie with a lot of action in the first couple minutes (Bond movies are good for this) and see if you notice any difference. (on a PC you may not really, though I guarantee on, say, a 50" TV you will notice a big difference between SD and HDX

          Or you can watch your SD video via a Blu-ray player that up converts to 1080. I just noticed that a couple of days ago. If I watch thru my smart tv the SD is 480, but if I got through the player....boom it's up to 1080!

            Yeah....not so much. The picture is still 480p, but, like scaling a video on computer screen (dragging the corner to change the size) you are not getting 1080 quality, but the video is "stretched" automatically by the hardware instead of the hardware sending out a 480 signal. I'm not sure how the extra pixels are filled in, and it may look slightly better, but it is not the same thing. You may get the same number of pixels as a 1080 movie, but they are not 1 pixel per original pixel, more like 4 pixels on the tv for each pixel in the content (probably worse than that, don't feel like doing math right now).

            Edit: Think I misunderstood what you were saying and I can understand how an app on the TV would more readily switch the TV resolution than my PS3 would (my PS3 is doing the upconverting, like your BD player). Still probably won't make a difference in picture quality, actually the smart TV app may produce a better picture switching to the original resolution than upconverting does.
