    What's the best device for streaming vudu?

    Simple put: what's the best device to stream vudu? Ideally it would do ALL the features 1080p, 3D, great audio, ect.

    Once they update the PS3 app for DD+ it would get my vote (actually already has my vote). It has dowload ability as well as the things you mentioned. It is a bit loud though, so I'd prefer it to be in a cabinet. I say this because it has the other functions of being a gaming system and Blu-ray player.

      I think Roku 3, It seems to be faster than the gaming systems and smart TVs. Just easier to use.

        We also love Roku and Vizio smart TVs are also great. Our Vizio Blu-ray player also does a great job. I am probably going to be hooking up our X-Box 360 this week and if Vudu will let me add another device I want to give that a try also.

            If price isn't a factor I'd go with PS3 as well - I have about a dozen devices that have VUDU at home (and worked on many of them) and the PS3 is what I use the most.

            If price is the primary factor I'd go with Roku (2XS or 3). The only caveat with it is it doesn't decode DD+ so you need a receiver that will do DD+ to get 5.1 sound. Also, the Roku Wifi isn't that great so you probably want make sure you have a solid Wifi signal to wherever you place it, or use wired Ethernet if possible (hence my recommendation of the 2XS/3 which have Ethernet).

              Does that include the Vudu BX100/1000? I'm still plugging along with those, but if I replace them, it might be nice to get something with more functions and capabilities. If the PS3 is that much better than the STBs, I might replace them before they break.

                I also have to go with the Roku 3. It is the only device where I don't have any buffering issues. Have watched all three of the LOTR extended editions without any buffering and those movies are extremely long.

                  No, I retired my BX100 a while ago... a 300Mhz Broadcom chip from about 2005 just can't compete with a 3 core 3GHz PPC and high end GPU I doubt there is anything we could do in a media app to get the UI to render under 60fps on the PS3...

                  Though now that I think of it, one other complaint for the PS3 - the remote is Bluetooth, so to use a universal remote for it you need an adaptor (I have the one for the Harmony). So if a universal remote is important, plan on spending another $60 for that, which brings the price up over $300 for a new PS3 (ie. 3 Rokus!)

                    Thanks, I might replace the old Vudu boxes sooner rather than later, then, as the PS3 definitely sounds like a step up....but that's also really good to know about the remotes, as I have to admit that I am a total Logitech Harmony fanboy.

                      I'd cast a vote for the WD Live Hub......Very versatile, streams and downloads VUDU movies, has DD+ output.......Plus, it streams movies from my network storage devices....One can also play and save music, photos and more......A PS3 would not work in my home cinema....The WD has a small form factor that makes it perfect for my setup.....

                      When CFF is deployed, I will go "all digital", with copies of my films on network storage......

                      I always wondered why the HUB or WD Live are not promoted on the VUDU site as prominently as other devices....... Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take..

                        I think the adaptor is around $30 new, so if you already have a Harmony it won't cost quite as much. I purchased the PS3 BT remote, which does OK controlling my Samsung TV and Sony Amp (not sure if it will control other brands of receivers).

                        Edit: Well, looks like $45 for the adaptor, new.

                          +1 for the PS3.

                          I've found most apps work the best on PS3. Xbox 360 would be good, but all the services are behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall, and I don't see a lot of value in paying M$ 60 bucks a year to access content I've already paid/am paying for (Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus).

                          It is worth noting that all audio is coming through the tv speakers (no separate audio equipment setup yet), so if you want the DD+ that some posters have talked about, it might not be the best option. I'm also a big-time gamer, so I had a PS3 well before it was supported by Vudu. If you don't already own a PS3 for gaming and/or blu-ray watching, it's likely not worth the investment.

                            Note that the PS3 will decode DD+ to 5.1 or even 7.1 uncompressed LPCM over HDMI, so you do not lose surround channels or quality. The only difference between giving your receiver 5.1LPCM or 5.1DD+ is that the DD+ data contains some information that may allow the receiver to do better dynamic compression of audio peaks if using a feature like "late night mode", etc.

                            Also, Sony has recently enabled support for bistreaming DD+ directly from apps - I can't give any timeline, but we are looking into implementing it.

                              Ps3 network is leagues behind xbox live. Not sure if you stay current with Playstation news, but you will be going you to have to have paid subscription when ps4 drop so they can try and compete with xbox service. I do agree ps3 hardware trumps xbox 360 for media specs but terrible with games nothing but issues with the big games that came out through his lifetime. New gaming systems coming out in 3 months or so, i wouldnt recommend buying a ps3 for streaming vudu. If you are dead set wait till after they come out for huge price drop for ps3
