    Best ways to grow collection....

I saw a thread about people having hundreds and thousands of digital movies. My question to you, and all others is what is the best way to grow your collection. What outside of the box ideas are there to help grow.

    Here's a few examples

    - Signing up (gettings 10 movies!)

    - Buying movies , getting the free code

    - Buying others codes online

    - Buying Dvd's at garage sales

Not sure if it's frowned upon / illegal but i suppose you could borrow movies from friends/family members. Not saying that i do or recommend it.

    What are your tips??

What you can do with family is share your UV lockers by linking them. Then try to buy movies once for the entire family. You buy one title and your brother, sister, cousin, father, or whoever should buy a different title. It's like getting two for the price of one...or three for the price of one if you have two other accounts linked to yours. I think the only movies that are actually shared are UV titles, so if you bought a movie on Vudu that isn't UV then they wouldn't be able to access it.

Buying used DVDs that are available for Disc-to-Digital is a very cheap way to grow your collection of older movies. Check Amazon.com for used DVDs. You can find great deals on Amazon most of the time.

Check Flixster to see if they still have a promotion for their D2D service. You may be able to get a few converted for free if they are still offering it. Probably not though, that was a while back.

If you add your friend/family member that you are borrowing from to your UV account there is no problem. I don't know that the studios really care either way, such D2D transactions are revenue that was not likely to be generated.

I will pay the $1.00 to buy a second-rate film at the pawn shop/garage sale and have it converted to SD for another $2.00 that I would never spend directly to purchase a new copy or buy through direct digital purchase. That is my main method of adding large quantities, especially during the 50% off promo here.

        Thanks for your guys feedback!

Another quick question, how long do you think the 50% off sale will last? I converted about 50% of my collection, and we going to convert the rest here and there. Do you foresee the 50% bonus discount on 10+ to remain for a while?

        Thanks

I browse at resellers that put the empty boxes on the shelves, and just take the UV redemption sheets.

            Most places don't even care.

I assume he meant stores that sell used DVDs and Blu-rays. We have a huge store here where I live that sells used media. You can find pretty much any movie you want there. It's huge!

Pawn shops use to be a good source, but I am finding in my area they are starting to stop accepting DVD & Bluray. They were getting a glut of them with so many people going to streaming or ripping the collection first.

Now, only a few pawn shops in my area have them. You can normally get a movie for $3 there.

I got AvP there and then did a D2D DVD->HDX upgrade on it for $5. Total cost was $8.

Not a great savings, but still about a 50% savings from the EST price.

                    Yup, as posted previously...

Pawn shops mostly, most Rainbow music & book stores have a used section, our local farmer's market has a used DVD/Bluray shop. Flea markets are the best...if you act friendly & buy even one used disk, ask if they mind if you take a few slips. I had a guy at one table actually help me look through a pile of his br's for redemption code slips

Re: Best ways to grow collection....

I've had a lot of luck with the pawn shops around here, plus going there gives you a peek at an interesting slice of life. I found one that sells DVDs for $0.75 and another that sells them for $1, yet they both keep a pretty good variety. I do the D2D conversion in batches to get the 50% discount, and then sell them to a used entertainment place that buys them for $0.75-1.00 each. I do make a point of only buying movies in good shape, but this way I grow the collection for basically the cost of the D2D conversion - $2.50 for "spectacle" movies and $1 for everything else.

                      Plus, I enjoy the hunt!

I've seen on craigslist where some people sell their DVDs in large lots in the neighborhood of $1 each. I could see buying a lot like that, but the trick is getting a bunch that you want but don't have within that lot. If you find a good lot, convert and then resell.

I've also wondered about a co-op type deal where the DVDs are sold from person to person within the group. I do think you should actually own DVDs you're converting, but I can see something like this working, as well.
