How long before day and date with Theater releases

In the past, many said it'd never happen. These same people stated that Blu-ray was the future and VOD wouldnt take off. Now, I just read that studios are hoping for the blu-ray replacement in 5-7 years and its more VOD style.

We are already seeing more of a VOD push from studios because they are using all streams to generate revenue instead of shoving only optical down our throat.

How long do you think itll be before you can pay Vudu $20 or so to watch a movie the same day it hits Theaters.

    Im betting under 2 years.

I've been pushing/suggesting this to Vudu for almost 2 years. My shoot from the hip pricing suggestion has been $50 - which I'd gladly pay for same day/date releases.

Yepp. I think the Studios will give in over time, especially if the price is right.

I'd prob go $35 max if the movie was HDX and day and date.

        How about a sliding scale?

$100 opening weekend (Thurs midnight to Sunday)
        $50 Mon-Sun week 2
$35 Week 3 till out of theaters

Even better, give people an option.

Hell, Id be willing to pay $10 per rental if they all came out in HDX the same day as BR and DVD.

I know that Mark Cuban's production company (Section Eight?) was toying with this for a handful of films: simultaneous theater and VOD release. But haven't heard much about it.

With the studios backpeddling on some issues, I think its bound to happen.

They've realized there are so many different revenue streams (none to profitable by themselves, but great as a whole) to branch out into.

I've argued for this too, but I don't think movie theater owners will like the idea very much. It's hard enough as it is to get people to come out as it is. (that's why they are adding IMAX, 3D, and digital projection technologies). And right now, movie theaters hold much more sway than VOD.

Well don't forget that movie studios already allow this practice with many major hotel chains already; and for around 10-15 dollars a movie.

Regardless, I would be happy if they would even allow movies to be released 2-3 weeks after it came out, in the theater. By which time it probably wouldn't even be in the theater anymore, and therefore shouldnt present a problem to the theaters.

The movies would still be in the theater after two to three weeks and they keep a higher percentage of the ticket price the longer a movie has been out.

Most all movies in my local theater are removed within 3 weeks, if not less, so I wouldn't say it true that all movies "would still be in the theater after two to three weeks." While it might be true where you live, it definately is not where I live. Regardless, that really isnt the point. Even if it was 3-6+ weeks or whenever, I'm sure it is definately shorter then the time it would take to be released on DVD, and therefore VOD.

In my area the movies are still showing a month later. It is unusual for them to have left the theater. But we also have many multiplexes in Northern Virgina with many having between 12 and 22 screens. There are also a few smaller ones that only have 7 or 8 screens.
Since there are so many screens, they have the room to show the films for a long time. Especially the IMAX theaters at AMC. They debuted this Summer and had that Panda animated movie playing for around 2 months until Eagle Eye replaced it.

Believe it or not there is a theatre in downtown Portland OR that is still playing "A Clockwork Orange".
