According to The Verge it will be UV compatible. One beta tester also reported getting 11 free movies when he signed up. They will be a bit player though, like CinemaNow.

The site mentions UV, D2D and 10 free movies. They have partnered with Rovi, so it should be similar to CinemaNow and Flixster. I see they plan to have gift cards, which gives them one advantage over VUDU.

Rovi is building quite the empire.

If you have a Target Red card you're supposed to have Beta access. They have a Credit Card but also just another card that just links to your checking account and "acts like a debit card. If you can't wait to check it out might be worth it.

This has to be the worst business idea i've heard. Target stuff is expensive, in the last year i bought one movie from there. Blu-rays are expensive, tvs are over priced and crappy. Furniture over priced and low quality. Only deal they have are when a movie first gets released. I check weekly ads for everyone and have for quite some time. Hell even there groceries are spendy. I'll put money on this it will fail or not get off the ground. Way to much competition

Shoot bestbuy's Cinema now doesnt even have their stuff together. My brand new 3d sony blu-ray player says coming soon for cinema now app, has for months. Does anyone have a working app for cinema now for other blu-rays players, or are they just internet streaming?

WTF?! Sony still having a problems with the CinemaNow app? It took many months for Sony to fix the CinemaNow app on my 2011 S580 BD player. I sent them dozens of emails back in 2012 and it did not get fixed until Feb 2012.

Very interesting. Clearly investing in the future.

iVoD does not have numbers to match what packaged media hauls in each quarter, but the trend is clear.

As a retailer, they could either watch this revenue dry up or join in lock step with the other retailers.

It is encouraging to see them adopt UV. I will be watching their progress. Thanks for bringing to the forum.

I was reading about this over the weekend. It's definitely big news.

I'm not sure how well it will compete with Vudu or other services, but this is good for the UV system. As the number of supporting providers goes up, so will membership, and it will continually put pressure on studios (looking at you Disney and MGM) to either make their videos UV compatible, or for those already supporting UV, make more of their catalog UV compatible.

It will be interesting to see how long marketplaces like Google Movies, iTunes, Amazon, and Xbox Video (all by tech companies) hold off on implementing UV. I am a big supporter of Android, but I do find it quite ironic that a company that tries so hard to make sure all of it's services are available across platforms, and even purchased Widevine (UV approved DRM), has said not one thing about supporting UV.

Vudu was an established iVoD OTT retailer when WalMart bought them. Target is green-fielding their play into the iVoD space. This puts them at a major disadvantage.

Still, looking at the top retailers in the country and pruning out grocery stores, drug stores, and home improvement stores, the top three (Wal-Mart, Target, & Best-Buy) all have UV iVoD services.

I do not know how the trend can be more clear. These are the retailers who buy packaged media from studios. They will demand UV compliance from their suppliers (the studios).

Still missing from that list of retailers are Costco, Amazon.com, DVDEmpire.com, DVDPlanet.com, and DeepDiscountDVD.com.

These are prolly to small to compete in the UV business like Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon and Target.

Dying to give this a try. I'm a RedCard debit card holder, but I haven't receive anything for it yet. Does anyone have a promo code for this that they don't want to use?

Regarding DVD sales, I think one or two of them are plenty big enough...especially collectively if two or more of them were to adopt UV. I would like to see at least a couple of online retailers adopt UV over the next few months. Probably the best two online retailers would be Amazon.com and MovieMars.com. I am not sure about Buy.com.

I also think that Netflix would make a huge difference if they were to join UV and don't forget Redbox Instant.

At this stage of the UV game nobody is too small!

Remember Netflix was a UV member, but pulled out. They didn't want to be in the business of showing your movies.

Netflix is in an interesting position I think. They have never been known as a retailer, and their business model is based off subscriptions. Since, for now at least, no other provider charges any fees to stream your UV movies, I would assume that Netflix backed away because there is no way they could justify charging to stream your collection when other options do not.

However, if in the future providers begin charging to stream your movies after a certain time period, Netflix could definitely make a play there to be the UV provider that streams all your films at one low monthly cost.
