Vudu's HD selection now outnumbers Apple TV's, Blu-ray might be next

For the fourth week in a row, Vudu leaves the flood gates open and continues adding HD movies to the its library in record numbers. Now with this week's additional 120 HD movies, it has replaced the Apple TV as the download service with the best selection of HD. According to Vudu, there are now 769 movies available (or coming in the next few weeks) compared to about 690 HD movies that are offered on the Apple TV. So at this rate, Vudu should also surpass Blu-ray's HD selection in about two weeks. Of course we are talking about quantity here, and not quality, which we're sure could be debated continuously. Unfortunately for movie fans, it's still not quite the ultimate solution, as there's no way to purchase movies in HD, rentals are still limited by 30 days and 24 hours, and worst of all, there is still about a 30 day window between when the latest movies are released on disc and when they show up on download services. But this does make us wonder what would happen if Hollywood eliminated the artificial differences between downloads and discs.

I always had an issue with the blue-ray selection. Too much Disney crap and too many mind numbing popcorn movies like "Meet the Spartans". It's improved some (for BD) in the last year but Vudu's HD selection is already much better suited to any self respecting film fan.

I agree the Blu-Ray selection leaves much to be desired and the prices of the movies are still too high even on DVD Tuesday's. Sony has a lock on this technology and it will be interesting if they published how they license the media creation to other studio's.

One pos. about bluray is you get ALL new releases in it now. Yes, there back stock aint so hot, but the new stuff is plenty. Up until now, Vudu only had new stuff in HD, and the PQ wasnt a comparison. Now that Vudu is offering HDX its MUCH better and why Im on board.

BR is going to be just like DVD -- everything is going to be released on it even bad titles. One problem that I've noticed is that many TV shows are still DVD-only even if they are broadcast, e.g. Life, Eureka, Psych, etc. (don't even get me started on BSG). That's why I really hope VUDU focuses on TV functionality now.

Just checked my Vudu after the latest database updates and they kept their promise of 1000+ HD titles by year end. As of today my Vudu shows a total of 11,602 titles, with 1151 being available in HD (many also in HDX). I think that puts Vudu ahead of Blu-Ray for total HD releases, and the HD catalog has been growing by over 100 titles per week lately. We could have over 2,000 HD Titles on Vudu soon. All with instant viewing, if you have 4MB internet service.

I'm I going crazy or did they just add about five hundred titles in the time it took me to watch The Mirror? I was looking at the total number before and it was closer to 11000.

Massive catalog growth is possible almost instantaneously from the Vudu owners perspective. I'm pretty sure there is a team working around the clock on encoding and dumping the finished output to the Vudu servers. Then they simply enable the titles to be "seen" in the database. It wouldn't surprise me if they have closer to 20K titles encoded, and they are just taking their time to keep the updates constant.

I wish I wasn't so busy at work now. There are several HDX titles I want to watch but don't have the time. We'll be busy through the end of the year. Hopefully I'll have a couple of days in December to relax and watch a few HDX titles and BD(Blu-ray Disc) titles on my growing list of movies I want to watch.

I've been thrilled lately to watch the database constantly increasing at a steady pace.

Vudu owners now truly have a seemingly bottomless vault of movies to choose from. I think Vudu is doing a great job on this front.

Now if they could spend some time on improving the organization of owned titles and then add streaming content (like home videos, You Tube, etc) then they'll truly have something to be VERY proud of.

I don't get why I would want to pay for and watch amateur low def video on YouTube from my home theatre system?

It seems like the PC and cell phones are well suited for that task.

I think they should keep focusing on Movies for now. Keep getting more new releases and keep doing HD/HDX encodes for as much of the catalogue stuff they can get a clean source for.

The growth of movie catalog has been really impressive. Not so long ago, it was just five or six thousand titles and less than 100 HD ones. Now, there's a ton of HD content and growing HDX library (speaking of which, there really needs to be HDX filter instead of "high-def" one). So only TV side is a let-down so far.

Still, I feel like I'm obligated to use my PS3 for Blu-Ray playback (since that's what everyone online keeps saying it's good for, lol ), so I just made a major buy on DDD using their 25% off sale and 4% Live.com cashback. It was top-tier/reference titles mostly, so $15-17/disk is justified IMHO. Will buy some more stuff this week since sale is not good on pre-orders.

P.S. If anyone gets a chance, you have to check out "Baraka" on Blu-Ray -- it's THE disk to show off your fancy TV.

I think you misunderstood my statement (maybe). I have zero interest in paying for that content. What I was mainly talking about was enabling the box to stream MY personal content from other computers or network drives on my home network. Mainly of interest here is the ability to play back home videos of the kids and also my library of owned DVD's that I've backed up to a network drive.
