    Does Tivo support playing .mpg files off of your network? I thought they only supported photos.

      I think they started supporting the HD video this past Spring. At least that was when I first messed around with it. It does have specific requirements, I'm not sure what is is offhand, but I've had no problems using the TiVo Desktop with my HD content on the Pc and watching it on my TiVos .

        I just checked the Tivo website. It looks like you need to buy the Tivo Desktop Plus Key for $24.95 to be able to watch videos stored on your PC (and network I hope). I'm going to give it a try.

          Well that was unpleasant. I had to uninstall Tivo Desktop to even get videos from my network to play on my computer with the Windows Media Player. It would just hang when I tried. Also, it cause my Tivo to hang and I had to reboot it. I don't think it liked dealing with the number of movies I had on my network (~700). Also, even if it did, it looks like it was trying to creat an alphabetized list in my "Now Playing" list. That would have been horrible for navigation on the Tivo. I really want something that maintains my directory structure (which XBox 360 does BTW).

            Yeah, I use my HR20 to play mp3's and display pics off my networked laptop.

              Personally, I dont like the DirecTV interface.. it is to busy, SLOW and not very well thought out, IMO. DirecTV has nothing on TIVO by comparison.

                Then why is a braniac like Redwein having such a problem getting it to work??

                On Directv I just pick a playlist I have set up on my PC and have hours of music to listen to via my Bose sound system. For me it works great. Plus you have an option to watch personal slide shows while listening to the music.

                      That's only because you enjoy the severe pain given from the metal collar you wear when you lose.

                        Another thing I like is the codec support.

                        From the Directv box, I am able to play my lossless 1Mbs music tracks that some Mystery Science Theater freak gave me awhile ago.

                        My Sonos system will not play these tracks direct from my PC. But I am able to connect the audio out from the Directv box to the Line In on one my Sonos boxes to listen to the music thru out my home.

                        Soooo.... What's not to like??

                          BUT, I get the HR20 for little cost as opposed to $12/mo and buying the unit. I should not expect as much out of it. Tivo needs all these extra gimmicks because their business model sucks (charging a high fee for what most providers now offer at least 75% of without the extra hassle)

                            Why is it that if you use the "Filter" option of the Vudu movie library and search on the criteria of:

                            HD = YES
                            Buy = YES

                            It returns about 450-500 movies?

                            I can understand if the query said:

                            SD = YES
                            Buy = YES

                            But I'm asking it for "HD" only AND "Can BUY" only....it's an AND statement, not an OR statement. Back to basics...

                            Am I missing something?
                            As Ed pointed out, it is not a Boolean "AND." It's really an "OR" function.

                            So what you are telling the box is this:

                            Show me all the movies that are available for purchase along with all the HD movies.

                            That's what making multiple selections across the different categories does -> It is a cumulative search.

                            If you search in genres (say: sci-fi checked and romance checked) then it will show movies that fall in BOTH categories. But searching for HD movies and movies available to purchase shows both.

                            I don't think the average consumer understands boolean logic. Think of instead of "and" the word "with."

                              I'm basically with you on this one. I'd much rather have a device that does everything and does it well but until that happens (or actually - IF that ever happens) I'll just continue hacking things.

                              BUT... XBMC on Windows has very little hacking to it. It's simple software that you download and run on your PC. The most difficult part is getting a remote control to work with it but I've now gotten that all figured out and I'm good to go.

                              It seriously works pretty well.
