Vudu XL2: Internet Streaming Goes Rack Mounted

For the guy who wants a Vudu system but demands a rack-mountable setup, the Vudu XL2 is here to foot the bill in Armani boots. It's essentially a Vudu XL in a premium aluminum package, storing a terabyte of content while squeezing within one rack unit of space. The catch is that it's priced at $1300. But hey, it costs to be Mr. I Have a Custom Home Theater Installer. Read on for the full details.

Re: Vudu XL2: Internet Streaming Goes Rack Mounted

The Vudu XL2 is a much wanted/needed solution for Custom Installers. We installed our demo one in our showroom on Tuesday and I must say that I am impressed with the construction and layout.

As stated, it is designed for rack mounting and includes the rack ears and screws. The black face fits right in with most rack mounted gear. It has the familiar 2 status LEDs and a blue back lit Vudu logo that can be adjusted to various dim levels or turned completely off by pressing the small button below it (its highest setting is way too bright for most theater rooms).

When I first pulled it out of the box, I was surprised at its 14.5" depth and, like the XL, its weight is a bit of a surprise too! My first thought was that the NEXT step is to put TWO XL boxes in this enclosure, similar to having two Kaleidescape Mini Players in a single rack space! :thumb:

Functionally, it is identical to the Vudu XL so there are no new features or break throughs. The hard disc is the same 1Tb one used in the XL.

Yes, it does cost $300 more, but if you were to purchase a custom rack shelf for the basic or XL, that adds about $200 there, plus it ships with the VAC106 IR adapter which is $39, so there is only about a $60 price difference when rack mounted and it only occupies 1U or rack space instead of 2U for a basic or XL on a utility shelf or up to 3U on a custom shelf.

FYI, Vudu also released a new website for Custom Intallation companies to refer their clients to. It currently features the XL2 on the front page along with links to the data sheet, etc. The main difference is that it doesn't have any info on the basic Vudu box or references to any retail stores. http://hometheater.vudu.com/

This site has a few broken links, and, clicking on the Vudu logo in the upper left takes you to the standard vudu.com site, but they are working on it.
