    Vudu arrives, disaster strikes!

    Plugged it in. Took a coax digital audio cable and outputted it from the Vudu and went to plug it into my $1500 Arcam AVR-250 receiver. Bam. Arcam is dead. Will not power on.

    $100 Vudu for a $1500 high-end foreign audio component that cannot be serviced in the US without going through serious hoops. I am sure Vudu will claim no responsibility, but I have plugged dozens of inputs into this Arcam, and this has never happened before.

    EDIT:

    In fairness to Vudu, it is true that there is no way to know that it was the Vudu. I am just saying, as the end user, it's hard not to seriously suspect it. I am not an electrical engineer however, so I don't want to make hard accusations here. I have no idea if its possible to short through a coax wire, although I would think it is slightly possible, compared to an optical cable which would be impossible I would think. I just want to be fair here. I still intend to keep my Vudu.

    EDIT2: I am swapping in a backup receiver to continue the initialization and setup of the Vudu. I will have to deal with the Arcam and I'll let you know how it turns out. There are used ones to be had for a 3rd of my original cost, so the worst prospects are still not that bad. Thanks for the support here by Vudu officials and the fellow users.

    Sorry to hear this happened. I can't imagine there being any significant voltage/amperage coming out of the DA port on the Vudu. Do you have any idea what might have happened?

      Connections weren't made while the devices were powered on were they? Connections should never be made when a device is powered on. That is when things can go bad.

        And of course, many VUDUs have been plugged into audio components without this happening either. As they say about electronics - they work great until the moment they stop working.

        Keep troubleshooting and hopefully you can get your audio receiver back in operation. Doesn't that unit have a fuse?

          I can't comment on what might have happened, though I invite you to open a ticket with support. I will say that I took a look at the Arcam's manual and there appears that there might a fuse in the power cord that you may want to check.

            I thought there might be a fuse in this thing. No connections were made while either unit was on, things can still go wrong when both units are off of course.

            I will look at the manual. Do you know what page it was on?

                OK it says something about a mains fuse in plug (if applicable) has not blown. I have no idea what that is. Why would there be a fuse in the plug? In the power cord? How would you know if there was? The outlet I'm using is still able to power other components, so it's not the power in the house.

                  Some Euro gear will have a fuse in the plug or power cord.

                      Any idea what that looks like? Any pics on the net you can point to? I can't imagine what that would look like. As far as I can see there is no fuse on the box itself.

                          Don't let that mislead you - the hodegmeister is really more of a mis-interprtation of Newton's third law - his understanding is that for every intelligent forum post there is an opposite and equal unintelligent forum post so he has taken it upon himself to compensate for all the good advise offered here.

                          According to the pics I've seen of your AVR-250 it uses an IEC320-C13 power cord connction (same as most PC's), so you could just swap another PC power cable into the mix and see if that works.

                            You're too much Brain. I can't come up with a comeback to that.

                            I forgot I passed my 1,000 post record, so I should have been more specific. Blame it on lazy finger.

                            What I wrote previously is the possibility of two components having electrical problems when tied together, caused by a potential grounding loop incured from wierdness in a homes electrical system.

                            So even if Brains new power cord solution works, you may well incur the same problem again. So I'm suggesting, in my obfuscated way, that you use Optical instead Digital cable for your audio connection (if possible).

                            Otherwise, perhaps you can make sure the VUDU box is on the same electrical circuit as your Audio system.

                            I'm also assuming and hoping your Audio system is just a fuse problem.

                              I know this is a dumb question.....

                              But you did verify that you're getting power to your Audo box??

                              We plugged in our Christmas tree a few weeks ago, and it knocked out my whole AV system. I had to move it to another circuit.

                              I also have occasional problems with stuff on a GFI circuit. The GFI breakers are very sensitive and sometimes pop for no apparent reason.
