    universal remote MX980

    I have a Universal MX980. The vudu box is located in my AV closet. I was wondering since the controller is RF if I would need to buy a IR dongle or can the controller control it directly? Also I am planning on purchasing a MSC-400 master control and was wondering if I could plug that into the I/O port for IR commands?

    You still need to buy the IR kit. The IO port on the back is not designed for IR voltages and damage will occur by plugging wired IR straight into it. However, I use a MX900 via RF through a MRF-350 and it works just fine.

      You will have to purchase the IR dongle either way. RF remotes work in many different ways and as far as I know there is no learning RF remote on the market. You also can't directly plug a controller's IR output into our IR input (you might actually damage the VUDU box if you try that). You will have to place an IR transmitter next to the VUDU IR receiver (or if the controller has multiple transmitters you can tape the transmitter to the receiver).

        Just an FYI, I programed my MX900 for Vudu and while it worked ok, the scroll wheel is so key to the Vudu basic function that I found the MX just not to be a good option for controlling the Vudu.

          ...one of the reasons why I like the philips pronto remotes. Their horizontal scroll wheel works like a charm.
