Vudu unable to take advantage of more than 4Mb/sec?

    Vudu unable to take advantage of more than 4Mb/sec?

    I just upgraded my cable to be able to go much higher than 4mb/sec. But the Vudu network utilization seems stuck at ~5Mb/sec max. Is there anyway for it to go higher?

    At this time there is no way to kick it into a higher gear.

    Several have requested such a feature, though not sure what the technical requirements would be. It would be nice to have "Instant HDX".

      One reason it wouldn't be a good idea is the P2P nature of Vudu. If you let people download at twice the maximum rate of today, it will either take twice as many peers or each peer uploading twice as fast. Since upload speeds are generally more limited than download speeds, this could create a problem during heavy demand times.

        Redwein is correct. 4 Mb/s is what is needed to stream normal HD content on Vudu. Prior to HDX it was never an issue. HDX takes more than double that. The peering requirements would be significantly increased. Vudu may at some point increase the d/l speed so you can get instant HDX (and I hope they do), but from my understanding, the requirements for the peering network are much more significant in order to guarantee an uninterrupted viewing experience.

          I'll be glad to donate some of my 20mbs upload speed. I would be glad to increase my three VUDUs upload speed by a factor of 10. SO they would upload at 3mbs instead of 300kbs. I rarely use much of my upload bandwidth. Although I do use more of my 50mbs download speed on a regular basis.

            You could overcome this problem if VUDU used some kind of smart P2P technology that would allow it to only use more bandwidth from those boxes that have selected higher bandwidth, so that it only downloads from those boxes that have the extra upload bandwidth to spare.

            OR

            Maybe we could have some kind of upload selector as well to tell the network how much bandwidth we have available for others to use. For example:

            Bandwidth Upload:

            * 400 kbps - Normal
            * 1 Mbps - High
            * 5 Mbps - Instant HDX

            Or something like that...you get the idea.

              You are right. That could work, but only if there were enough boxes that could contribute that higher upload bandwidth. If there were only a tiny fraction of the overall userbase, it wouldn't work because the content would not be very likely to exist on the high bandwidth boxes so the lower bandwidth ones would have to provide it. I don't know where the line is but I'm sure there is one.

                And that is also something the box could determine...when it gives the estimate for how long it will take, in this case 4 hours for HDX, it could check what is available and if not enough have the HDX movie it could give an estimate of 4 hrs, but if it found enough it could give a lower estimate or instant. In other words, when you select HDX to rent. It would give you a dynamic real-time estimate, based on what it knows of the network of high bandwidth boxes, and if instant is available, based on the network availability...it could provide instant HDX. Now whether any of this is feasible or not, is another story.

                  Actually, I take back what I said in my previous post. It would just work without any fancy additional algorithm. Having a box that both downloads and uploads twice as much as a normal box should be identical to just putting 2 normal boxes on the net, at least from the P2P perspective. That seems like a reasonable thing to hope for.

                    Well, I'd agree with this completely. If you have instant "HDX" available on the box, then you would need to upload at 600 kbps instead of 300 kbps.

                      I'm not looking for instant HDX, although it would be nice. I am just looking to be able to download an HDX in maybe 2 hours instead of 4.

                        Right now it's not supported. 4 Mbps is the limit. It's not just as simple as letting the Vudu download faster. You are dealing with an entire peering network of thousands of Vudus out there.

                          One of the goals of the VUDU was to make it an appliance. Having too many "geek" settings will turn away consumers due to the confusion and can increase the cost of supporting the product.
