    Blue Ray vs. HD/HDX Comparison Thread?

    Hey, I was just looking for some info on Ed's thread regarding the number of Blue Ray titles vs. HD/HDX. I can't find it. Anyone know what happened to it?

    A couple days ago somebody pointed out the great detailed listing of BR titles at http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php . I have to say it is much harder (if not impossible) to get a simple text listing of the 1,407 HD titles on Vudu. Anyway, with that 1,100 title listing in hand, I set out to compare the catalogs. The results were surprising:

    Quantity By Studio (easiest sort to find on the Vudu)

    The support of MGM for Vudu obviously has a major impact on the superior size of the Vudu catalog.

    Duplicates

    In the past I had estimated that there were about 900 duplicates across the 2 platforms - I was terribly mistaken. I had estimated this based upon the last years movie releases, where pretty much everything new came out on both platforms. After a detailed catalog review I have determined that there are only 249 duplicate HD titles both on BR and on Vudu. The thing that really jumped out at me were the huge number of "not a movie" titles on BR (TV shows, Music Concerts, Documentary/Tourism, other (i.e. Fireplace?), vs the Vudu catalog being pretty much all movies. I did not include SD versions on Vudu of the same movie as duplicates on BR. I think the duplicate listing would double to about 600 if the SD versions on Vudu were included, but that's not really an apples to apples comparison, we're only talking HD content.

    Catalog Inflation - Content is King

    The thing I found in the BR listing that I think inflates that 1,100 listing is the number of duplicates that overlap (i.e. Terminator 3 and Terminator 3 1080i, "A Christmas Story" gets 3 hits, or when they list a Collection of other movies on the list like Resident Evil Trilogy as an additional title). The closest thing you will find to that in the Vudu catalog is when they have something like Close Encounters of the Third Kind with 2 releases (Theatrical vs. Directors Cut). There are less than 20 such duplicates in the Vudu catalog. FYI, when there are both HD and HDX versions of the same title, that title only counts as 1 in the Vudu catalog. If you are going to count T3 and T3-1800i is as 2 titles, then the Vudu HD/HDX catalog is much larger (likely over 2,000), but I don't think that is a fair representation of the the true catalog content.

    Common Curses

    No matter what platform you are using, there are some things in HD that on both just shouldn't be:

    Purple rain
    Step Into Liquid

      Dude, why are you dissing Purple Rain? The film may ooze cheese, but vamping is a hallmark of Prince, and there are few artists that have enjoyed the longevity of Prince.

      The other one that comes to mind is U2, and what do you know, their lead man is also big into vamping and cheese. I love them both. Purple Rain is a classic, the album, the film, the time. It should be in any serious 80's film catalog. What we need is a good remastering of that film, because most cuts I've seen are crappy. Maybe the cinematography just wasn't that good.

        Apparently this guy has several fully produced music videos looked in his safe that he payed to have made and then never released (Prince that is, not jokeysmurf!). From what I've heard he's a little out there...

            First, please don't quote an entire long post in a reply!

            Second - I think you are correct about Purple Rain being a classic 80s film. That said, you couldn't pay me enough to watch it or listen to music from Prince, or is it "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince"? Oh wait, it's Prince again. Any guy who's got such an identity crisis about his name and his gender (come on, he's totally effeminate) is not for me! :-) Well, wait - you could pay me enough but you couldn't afford my price!

            Yeah, well I've been a U2 fan longer than most U2 fans have been alive and I much prefer the Bono of the early and mid-80s....

                I got to see U2 live back in 1987 or 1988 I think it was. I forget which tour - Joshua Tree perhaps? It was awesome...

                  I think any Bluray fanboy is gonna always think that BD is better. honestly to my eyes Vudu's HDX is outstanding and on par with BD and HD DVD. of course fanboys seen complain about the fact that HDX lacks in the surround sound dept. Im not huge on that factor, PQ is far more important to me. hats off HDX is amazing!!!

                      Cool, I saw them on ZooTV tour (leg 1), Popmart (leg 1), Elevation (US leg 1 and US leg 2 right after 9/11), and Vertigo.

                      Elevation was an amazing tour.
