    Dolby Digital Plus (missprint?)

I just noticed on the specs page (as I was ordering 2) it lists the VUDU box as Dolby Digital Plus. Is this a misprint because it is also listed as HDMI 1.1. In order to pass DD Plus bitstream you must have HDMI 1.3. The only way it could be DD Plus is if the box decoded and sent out full LPCM audio.

We do use DD+. But you are right we are not outputting it. The vudu box transcodes DD+ to 640 kbit/s DD for digital outputs (as defined by Dolby).

DD+ is used in the transport stream. It makes for a more efficient use of bandwidth as I understand it. Search for it here in the forums. There's been a lot of discussion on it.

Thanks, can/could the box decode DD Plus and send it out as LPCM? Are you about to release a 1.3 compliant box (after I just bought 2)?

If so you could offer music/concert/opera/theater programs (sorely missing from your catalog) with DD Plus 1.5Mbps or better yet full 3.0Mbps.

EDIT: To remove TrueHD reference since the Broadcom chip doesn't support.

My understanding is that the current Broadcom chip that is the heart of the Vudu would not support those higher level formats. Also, having larger audio formats and more of them would dramatically increase the needed stream bandwidth.

I am not aware of any plans at this point for new hardware. But then again, while I've been with Vudu since the beginning, at the end of the day, I am still a consumer like you...

The Broadcom chip supports DD+ but not TrueHD.

A new box with HDMi 1.3 and the ability to bitstream the DD+ audio would get me to buy another box.

Do like Directv does, trade it in for an upgrade and they can resell it as a refurbished unit.

Not everyone needs these capabilities so there should be a reasonable resell market for used boxes.

Roger Dressler of Dolby Labs stated on the AVS forum (paraphrasing) that DD and DD+ were the exact same quality at the same bit rate. He said that DD+'s advantages over DD were the ability to go to higher bitrates (3.0Mbps vs 640Kbps) and the ability to scale in more discreet channels (10.2(?) vs 5.1). So not sure why VUDU is sending DD+ then transcoding to DD unless the original in deliver in DD+ (why not transcode pre) or the DD+ is at a higher/lower bitrate than the outputted (640Kbps?) DD.

If they just made the current box decode the DD+ and send as LPCM you can get the full benefit of DD+ without upgrading (though I do prefer bitstream too).
