HDR10 Support Is Now Available On Vudu

    Is anyone else having this problem?

    I have a Roku 4 connected to a Sony XBR-75X940C, which I know does HDR because I've displayed dozens of UHD discs on it. But when I go to the UHD streaming versions in my Vudu collection, the HDR option is always grayed out. Examples include Wonder Woman and The Accountant, both of which are supposed to be in the initial crop of movies enabled at Vudu for HDR10.

    Even more interesting: When I access Vudu on the Sony TV or on the Samsung app on my UHD player, Vudu doesn't even offer the option of the UHD copy.

    Any insight is welcome.

      Unless I'm mistaken, the Roku 4 doesn't support HDR. I believe that model was the first 4K Roku streaming player, but the HDR compatible models weren't released until a year later. You'd want a Roku Ultra, or similar model.

        Ah, thank you.

        I was under the mistaken impression that Roku added HDR support to the 4 with a firmware update, but some further research confirms that they did not.

          OK, now I've just acquired the Roku Streaming Stick Plus, which is billed as having HDR support -- and Vudu *still* has the HDR logo grayed out. Any ideas?

            To change the HDMI signal format setting, press the HOME button, then select [Settings] ? [External inputs] ? [HDMI signal format]. Standard format Standard HDMI format*1 for normal use. Enhanced format High-Quality HDMI format*1*2. Set only when using capable devices.
            *1 HDR included (HDR models only). HDR models have [HDR mode] in [Settings] ? [Picture & Display] ? [Picture adjustments] ? [Advanced settings] ? [Video options].
            *2 4K 60p 4:2:0 10bit, 4:4:4:, 4:2:2 etc. Note

            • When using [Enhanced format], picture and sound may not be output correctly. In this case, connect the device to an HDMI INthat is in [Standard format], or change the HDMI signal format of HDMI IN to [Standard format].
            • Set to [Enhanced format] only when using compatible devices.
            • When you watch 4K picture with High-Quality, use a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable(s) that supports speeds of 18 Gbps. For details on a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable(s) that supports 18 Gbps, refer to the cable specifications.

              I probably should have mentioned that the Roku is being fed through an HDMI input on the Sony that has already been set to enhanced. I have confirmed its ability to accept 4K/HDR with one of Sony's UHD players.

                Solved it.

                The Roku Vudu app won't give you HDR unless you manually change the Roku's display setting to 4K HDR 60hz. Roku's default setting is "Auto", regardless of your TV's capabilities.

                  I have the Streaming Stick + and am not able to get HDR out of it- I also get the "HDR" logo on the movie pages greyed out. For some reason the unit does not automatically sense that my TV supports HDR, but gives me the option to force it anyways which still produces a picture when it asks "Can you still see the picture?" But I still can't get any HDR content out of the stick. I get both Dolby Vision and HDR out of my 4K disc player, so I know my TV is at least generally set up right for that.

                    To determine 4K/HDR support, the Vudu Roku app checks with the Roku system software to ensure the following: device supports 4K HEVC, device is outputting 2160p, device supports HDCP 2.2 (which will be enabled when video plays back), device supports HDR10 (which should return true always if it does) and TV supports HDR10 (this is all between the Roku and TV, our app only gets whatever it reports). If the 4K/HDCP checks return true, it will play 4K; if the HDR10 checks do, it will enable HDR10 logo in the UI and playback.

                    As some have said, you may have to set specific settings on the Roku, as well as make sure the HDMI port it's connected to on the TV has "deep color" (or whatever that TV calls it - basically it's 10 bit bt.2020) enabled. Don't really have any other advice beyond that... maybe Roku support could help at that point?

                      Thanks for the detailed explanation, Jake! But here is a new puzzle.

                      My Roku streaming stick is happily playing most movies with HDR in my collection. But several titles still have the HDR icon grayed out. There is no apparent pattern to the selection of what does not play. Examples include Lucy, Goodfellas and La La Land.

                        I believe those titles are not yet available on Vudu in HDR10, just Dolby Vision. Since Roku's don't support Dolby Vision it will play the 4K SDR version.

                          That's interesting. So just because a UHD version has the "*HDR" symbol, that doesn't automatically mean it's available in HDR10?

                          Does Vudu use the "*HDR" symbol for both HDR10 and Dolby Vision?

                              Not exactly. There are titles that bear the HDR symbol but aren?t available in HDR. Two more that I?ve found are ?I Am Legend? and ?The Town?.

                                Exactly. To know for sure check the "More Info" section of each title. It will specify what is available. Some titles are 4K only. Some are 4K Dolby Vision and HDR10. Others only carry one version of HDR. If you see any title as HDR then you are receiving it correctly. The HDR symbol refers to both or just one.
