    Straight Answer About Dolby Atmos?

I own several Blu-ray movies with Dolby Atmos sound tracks. You do not need a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc to get the Atmos track. Is it true that VUDU only streams the Dolby Atmos track if you're watching a UHD version of the movie?

Vudu only attaches atmos soundtracks to uhd files but they can be attached to HDx streams as well if they wanted to. Of course they use more bandwidth than the regular dd plus streams.

It is an 'upsell' feature they can use to attract buyers to higher priced uhd purchases.

Yes, and it stinks! C'mon Vudu, let us users who don't have a 4K TV yet enjoy Dolby Atmos!

I'd like to see the bulk of my library with Dolby Digital Stereo track get upgraded to a DD 5.1 track that blu-rays and other retailers have as well..I'd be estatic!

That is truly disappointing. I have just started using VUDU to watch all the movies I've purchased that include digital copies. I was looking forward to the convenience. But to have to pay extra money to listen to the Dolby Atmos track that I already own is a deal breaker. I spent lots of money upgrading my home theater to a Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 speaker system. The Dolby Atmos movies honestly sound better compared to regular movies. If I have to pop in the Blu-ray disc to enjoy this, my reason for using VUDU has just evaporated. My PLEX server streams Dolby Atmos tracks just fine.

I am pretty sure but have not double checked that if you own a UHD title on Vudu and you do not play it on a certified Vudu UHD player, it will only play the HDX file. Even though you may have an Atmos receiver, it will ignore that and play the DD+ audio.

hope that if that is the case, Vudu would allow at the very least allow the Atmos audio to pass through so folks without the proper viewing hardware (for now) can at least enjoy the vastly improved Atmos audio when available (on an owned UHD film) .......

It?s fake Atmos anyway. On a Blu-ray it?s lossless based on TrueHD. Any other source is giving you the version based on Dolby Digital so heavily compressed.

I couldn't have said it better! They have an atmos track on the hdx Dolby demo clips, so they can do it

I believe the corporate stance is that UHD is seen as a premium tier, and as such should have superior video AND audio to HDX streams as an incentive to purchase at a higher price.

Not saying I agree with that stance, just to say I agree that they have the technical capability to add to HDX. Heck, in theory it is possible to add HDR to 1080p content as well but I don't expect that to ever happen.
