The manual for the Denon 5700 dated Feb 6, 2006 can be found at http://www.usa.denon.com/avr5700_ownersmanual.pdf . Perhaps somebody more familiar with the nuances of Dolby could determine whether the problem in the OP was operator error, incompatibility, or defective hardware.
My purpose here was not to re-open the whole 'what's the problem?' thread again. If anyone is interested, that discussion is here:

    http://forum.vudu.com/showthread.php?t=6566

To sum it up, it's an incompatibility. The Denon works flawlessly, with every conceivable digital source. The Vudu works flawlessly with every other receiver. They just won't work together. And that's not just my opinion: Vudu engineering agrees. Here's an email from them:

    "Greetings,

I apologize for the delay. I talked with a few of our engineers about this and apparently this is a random issue they are trying to reproduce. Apparently it happens to higher end receivers and it's random and with a few different types, and unfortunately yours is on the list. We are waiting for test equipment right now so hopefully a fix will be coming soon. Not exactly the best answer but it's all I can give at this time."

So to repeat, I am very, very impressed with the Vudu customer care. It's the new standard. They are excellent, and should be commended.

My purpose, once again, was not to re-open the issue; it was to say thanks to everyone at Vudu and on this forum for their help.

When the issue is fixed, I'll be back!

I understood that. That's why I thought the discussions we were having about what one would do without a Vudu were actually "on topic" and not taking it off course.

Good point. And yes, I agree.

But while we're talking about alternatives, there's one thing I forgot to mention.

I've tried using all kinds of movie downloads...Amazon via the Tivo S3, iTunes, BitTorrent... and they all shared the same poor PQ. The videos, even in so-called HD...were washed-out looking. No really black blacks, no vibrant whites...just sort of gray.

The only download service that provides true HD is Vudu.

I believe its the best quality picture available on any download venue, period.

I'll have to take your word for that. I'm so spoiled by the UI of Vudu that I can't even get far enough to watch a movie on my TivoS3/Amazon. I get so disgusted by that interfact that I just give up. The interesting thing is that I feel the same way about any non-Tivo DVR when comparing them to Tivo's DVR interface.

            A question:

How will you know if the issue gets fixed w/o having a box? Generally these little tweaks don't get publicized and w/o users pushing to have the fixes, the motivation to put the time into testing and debugging just isn't there (as there are a million priorities and to-dos to get done and only 24 hours in a day).

So...how will you know if the fix ever happens?

IMHO, you should have kept the box and enjoyed it for it as it could be used w/your equipment now (sure, you don't get the good audio now but w/o a box you get no good video either - case of throwing out the baby with the bath water). And you should have kept pressing engineering to get your problem fixed.

A Vudu with no DD5.1 is better than no Vudu at all....

I might never know. But I'm not that worried about it.

So then your statement of "I'll be back when it's fixed" really is meaningless.

Bottom line: You felt the Vudu wasn't right for you. Just say that.

                  The Vudu didn't work.

                  Dude, take an aspirin!

No, your Denon doesn't work. :-D

You see, I'm just trying to get you to be honest with us, that's all. If you really felt the Vudu was as good as you claim you think it is, you would have kept it and waited for tech support to get the fix (which they would get in time). Instead, you opt to go with lower quality solutions and you then give us the line of "I'll be back." I doubt it as you wouldn't have left in the first place had you really liked the product.

Enjoy your cable system's VOD. And that's fine if that meets your needs. Your PQ there won't be as good but at least you'll have DD on some movies.

I hope you do come back but if you don't that's fine.

Another solution would have been to get a modern receiver with HDMI.

I couldn't imagine going back to using devices without HDMI.

That will come in handy in the long run. I believe the OP said he would get a Vudu again if he did that.

He also said he would be back if he got a new receiver. I think his original post was very reasonable.

Then why not just hold onto the box until you spend the money on a new receiver..

Oh well, if he comes back I'll eat my words and maybe send him and Hodge some cheese!
