    Re: Large Vudu collections

I'm not at all telling people how to spend their money. To each his own. At the TSO show today, they announced that there was a fan there who was at his 500th TSO concert. Good for him, but even that makes me wonder how that's possible.

I believe I mentioned in my original posts some movies come with codes. If not, I certainly know that, as I look for them in the store. I still stand by my $8-12 range. No matter how long a DVD has been in your collection, you still bought it at some point. That cost is no no more sunk than the Blu Ray you bought yesterday. It's all in the past. Makes no difference how far in the past. It's still money you earned that you spent. I've converted all of my eligible DVDs. What boggles my mind more than money spent buying is the time spent watching. Again, to each his own. It would take tens of thousands of hours to watch some people's collections. I'd say nobody knows anyone who does that simply because that person never leaves his television!

      Re: Large Vudu collections

I know someone who built a rather large collection of dvds, over a couple thousand, over the last several years between buying used discs at under $1 each and new discs at Big Lots for $2 to $3. I think he averaged something like 80 cents a movie. If he ever goes digital, he will have a lot of movies he can D2D!

        Re: Large Vudu collections

I think it's just about being a smart shopper and waiting for deals. In the last 5 weeks, I've been able to get the 6-movie Fast & Furious blu collection for $14, and the 5-movie Alien/Prometheus blu collection for $20, both brand new from major retailers during sales. The Fast movies came with HDX UV codes, as did Prometheus. That's a total of $34, or $3.09/movie, with 7 of 11 coming with free cloud-based digital copies. The 4 Alien movies are all D2D eligible, so I'll need to spend an extra $4 when I decide to get those in the cloud too. Of course, not all my movies were purchased for that little (although many were even cheaper), but it's been years since I paid $10 or more for just one movie. I'd say my average is probably in the $5 range.

          Re: Large Vudu collections

Very rare for me to have paid more than $5 for a DVD, as most were purchased at garage sales or at store specials.

            Re: Large Vudu collections

I don't buy the logic of treating the disc cost for my DVDs as part of my digital library cost. I purchased those discs long before I ever considered building a digital library and certainly didn't buy them for that purpose. I still have those DVDs and will continue to have them regardless of whether or not I still have a digital movie collection. The true cost of my digital library is the incremental $$ I spent to build it (D2D, digital purchases from VUDU, etc.).

            Just my opinion...

I'm a guy, too. I understand that kind of logic/justification for spending money. If you notice, my original post is more about movie collections than digital collections. Whatever story you come up with for your wife, I'll back you 100%!

Jeff - I am confused (not particularly difficult). I was responding to the title of this thread and all of the posts that followed and was referring to my VUDU collection, which is digital. Apologies if that was not clear in my post.

BTW, I have no issues with my wife - she helps decide which titles (disc and/or digital) we should get next. Our VUDU collection has been a nice gift that we have been able to share with family.

I see what you're saying about the digital collection. I don't see a distinction (for the purpose of this thread) between a physical and a virtual collection, whereas you do. That's fine. How people spend their money is up to them. (Unless they're on welfare, but that's not a topic to discuss here. ) I think it baffles my mind more to consider how much time it takes to watch a collection, than the money spent obtaining it.

OK, though am still confused. So I am curious - what was your theory on why people have large VUDU collections?

Jeff - forgot to mention that I have no expectation and no desire to ever watch everything in our VUDU library. However, I am confident that pretty much everything will get watched (some many times) by my linked family members over time. That's why we started the collection and that drove many selections. We assemble it for collective tastes and interests.

Interesting. I myself really wouldn't consider buying titles only for others to watch. As a rule, that is. There's always an exception. I've bought a couple titles for the kids my wife sits for. But they still get watched here at my house.

                          Re: Large Vudu collections

When I buy, I buy for me first, other to view second. My wife buys for her to watch first, me if I feel like watching something when she has control of the TV and I don't feel like going to my "room". I've learned to like quite a lot of her movies, however, there are still a lot I will never watch again. My collection is for me and my kids. They like my movies more than their mothers. Mostly because I get the newer movies they grew up with while my wife's are older than we are. (She really likes old movies.) Like I said before, I've been collecting for a long time. Started with VHS, moved to DVD then to Blu-rays. I still have some old VHS tapes but that is because they aren't available on DVD or they were collector editions. I've replaced a good portion of my DVDs with Blu-rays and all new purchases are on Blu-ray. Streaming copies are more for the kids (they are all out of the house now) and I got quite a few thru codes. I still have a few left to convert but in home D2D isn't recognizing the discs and Wally world is not working in my area cause of the Fuji system. I know I've spent more than my fair share on movies, but I enjoy what I have and I enjoy collecting them. That has led to some bad movie choices to fill in a collection, but I still buy them. Cut-out bins, sales, bundles...all new, nothing pre-owned. I like to tear things up myself as opposed to getting something second hand. Crazy on my part, but that's the way it goes. And now I'm rambling on...so I guess it's time to shut up...

Okay, next question: how many people buy a new title only because it's in the $7.88 bin at Walmart? I like buying those, but it's still got to be a movie I know I'll like. And some that I know I like, I still put back in the bin!

I've only bought a few of those. I just don't pay that much for a movie as a rule.

With you on that. Only buy what I like. Why buy something else. Now, if my kids ask for a movie and I find it in the bin, I'll probably get it, unless it is something like Twilight. In that case, I'll let them know and they can buy it and then add it to the collection. After all, they are all grown up and make their own money.
