Hey, I was just curious...I own about 256 HDX movies with Vudu. Last year I bought a 4k TV, and I was wondering if anyone has ever brought up the idea of doing some sort of upgrade discount price for movies we already own in HDX when purchasing the UHD version. You only just recently released a Vudu beta version for 2017 4k TV owners.

Pricing and upgrading of movies from HDX to UHD..

Itunes gives you free 4K upgrades from owned purchased or redeemed movies on Itunes but vudu does not. If you are looking to continue a big collection might want to use Itunes for the free upgrades. Vudu did however make it easier to upgrade to UHD but giving the option if you already own the movie on some (or all ?) movies. Yeah I wish vudu did a discount for previously owned movies to upgrade to 4K
-
Yeah, considering how many folks have a large movie collection through Vudu, people would be more apt to upgrade a larger portion of their older purchases if they simply offered a discount. I think they would actually make more money this way in the long run.
Also consider they already do this to some degree, if you own a Disc and scan it to your library, they offer a slightly higher fee to upgrade to a higher format. They need to do this for their digital versions. I think all users should start pushing for this.

Amen. I posted this same sort of thing in the "User Suggestions" sub-forum. I know that if I've gotten a digital copy with my blu-ray (and it's either UV or iTunes) I've always chosen to redeem through Vudu so I could watch on different devices and not be stuck with iTunes. Now that they've done the 4K upgrades, I definitely regret having done that...sigh...

Resolution upgrade for a fee has been suggested & requested in this forum more times than you have hair on your head. Vudu never acknowledges publicly that it is ever even brought up. The real deal here is that Apple is not only giving UHD upgrades for free, but their sale prices on older 4k titles @ $5 to $10 literally blow Vudu's prices away. I witness it every day on a forum with over 50,000 members. People like me are called "Vudu Dinosaurs".
I see people starting out with their movie collections asking which way to go, and now that UV sharing isn't allowed there is nothing Vudu offers besides D2D that I can even use as an argument as to why go with Vudu. Apple is the place to be if you want 4K. Vudu is letting their market be overtaken by the giant, and is doing little to nothing to avoid being swept aside.
4K isn't going anywhere, but you better believe if there isn't some paradigm shift soon within this market, Vudu will be following Cinemanow, Target Ticket, M-Go, & Flixster right down the tube. I seriously hope they wise up.

It would be nice, and seemingly beneficial to Vudu, if they did match what iTunes is doing and did with 4K.

These posts are all true. I also have made a huge investment in Vudu, but because of the 4K situation, I'm finding myself look at the iTunes store and purchasing 4K movies there more and more. I want Vudu to succeed! Vudu is the best in many ways, but 4K is the most important thing right now and Apple is currently winning on this most important feature.

This has been requested so much by so many, yet with seemingly no response ever from Vudu on the topic, it appears to fall on deaf ears. I have about 1,500 in my collection, and though I don?t have 4K yet, I know eventually I will so I am buying new titles in 4K. I would like to start and upgrade my collection if Vudu gave the option. The main reason I love Vudu is the disc to digital program. If it wasn?t for that, the 4K issue and the lack of reasonably quick customer support (still have a ticket that is almost 8 months old...might be walking soon!) would cause me to likely jump ship.

I'm in no hurry to upgrade my titles at this point because of all these issues which make me doubt that this will be the case much longer. I think either free upgrades, or at least an upgrade option, will become available at some point. I wonder if it's been so slow because customers, by and large, have been really slow to embrace 4K as a format.

This is something I've been hoping for an searching info for for some time now. I agree that eventually they will have to offer the option to upgrade titles you already own to UHD. UHD is becoming more widesrpead/mainstream everyday, and in a few years I think it will be the new standard. I would be more than willing to pay a reasonable fee to upgrade any movies that offer 4K, but doing it for free would be awesome on Vudu's part! I do know I will not pay full price to upgrade to UHD, so they're not getting any money from me in that regard, and I'm willing to bet most other people would be of the same mind. With that consideration, I think they really have nothing to lose, but lots to gain by offering this option.

I own about 935 movies right now. VUDU probably has the UHD rights for about 40-50 of them. I would pay max of $4 to upgrade my movies to UHD, but there is no way in the world I'd pay more than that. So while I see these deals for UHD movies now for $9.99 which normally would be a good deal, I already own most of those movies (and paid for them) I'm not going to spend an additional $9 for the UHD. If VUDU is listening, you are losing out on a lot of money for the folks who feel the same as myself.

I don't think they have a choice. Apple will soon be offering Dolby Atmos so it's a no brainier that Apple TV is the way of the future to watch movies. I love Vudu but they don't need to charge so much certain movies or formats. If you already own the movie you shouldn't have to pay full price for the 4K or 3D upgrade. I would even be ok with paying the difference. If the regular HDX is $15 and the 4K is $20 or $25 they should at least charge $5-$10 extra and not the entire price. The would still be making money and they will have a lot more loyal customers

I am pretty positive the free HD to 4k upgrades iTunes currently offers did not come as a 'free offer' from the studios. Someone over there pushed very hard for it, and maybe even applied some pressure to the studios to get it. Or they are paying the upgrade difference themselves to the studios (minus Disney because Disney can't be bullied).
Vudu can pressure the studios to get the same exact deal iTunes has - or something similar like a 'pay the difference' option. But the key is someone has to PUSH for it at Vudu.
