Linking Vudu to second Movies Anywhere Account Downgrades previous UHD redeems

Wondering if others have seen this or are experiencing this...

I unlinked my Vudu from my original Movies Anywhere Acct and linked it into my wives. All good seemingly.

Then yesterday I noticed that my previously UHD Guardians of the Galaxy was now HDX in Vudu.

Then I found 'The Matrix' also downgraded to HDX.

Of most interest, They are both in my Vudu history as UHD! They are also still listed as 4k in my Movies Anywhere account (which Vudu is not linked to for the moment).

I checked further and found at least 7 others that were downgraded in Vudu. Further looking showed that they were all previous UHD redeems made on Movies Anywhere (or DMA previously). No other redeems at other retailers seemed to be affected (such as Vudu , iTunes, etc).

The way to find them is to go into your Movies Anywhere account Transaction History and use your browser search to look for '4k'. Any title that is from Movies Anywhere or Disney Rewards can be affected (if you linked to a second MA account).

Vudu will not fix and says it is a Movies Anywhere issue. I will be calling Movies Anywhere tomorrow.

    Anyone else seeing this?

Is your Vudu account linked to another MA account?

If yes, that can cause issues. If no, then it is a Vudu issue and disconnecting does not make any changes.

Disconnecting a Vudu account and connecting it to ANOTHER MA account could cause issues as you can't double back on licenses that way.

But if this is a pure disconnection, then any changes that happen after disconnection can't be related to MA.

It's a Movies Anywhere issue. Go call them and tell them what you did. :eyeroll:

Well, I called 'Movies Anywhere' and they of course put the blame back on Vudu LOL. They told me something along the lines of 'Vudu informed them they have a policy where they must keep all redemption qualities in the users inventory due to UV'. I believe they are called 'Shadow Copies'. She (the Movies Anywhere agent) claimed that is what confused the system.

Otherwise beyond that all she did was verify the films are 4k in my MA account, and are HD in my wife's account (which my Vudu is currently linked into).

So the usual pass the potato to the other guy. Leaving me stuck I suppose for now.

All I care about is that when I relink my Vudu back to my main MA account in about 4 months that the UHD licenses return and work properly. I suppose if not maybe MA will be able to help at that point. But I suppose we shall see.

Gamescan: It was an unlink and then connecting to another MA account.

My understanding is one a movie is tied to your MA account, it will stay there forever, but your retailer may only retain what you bought through that specific retailer. So if you had an HD copy redeemed through Vudu, and a 4K copy redeemed elsewhere, when you disconnected MA, you'd go back to the one that Vudu "owned". Whatever you have in MA goes to whatever is currently linked to your MA account.

Similarly, if you unlink UV, you will probably lose all of the movies from your Vudu library which it ported in from UV, but stuff you bought on that specific Vudu account should remain available.

That makes total sense to me, and I hope it will work that way. If when I link back my account all goes back to the way it was before I will be a happy camper.

Can anyone with Vudu confirm or even someone not with Vudu with some experience with this confirm this is how it works?

According to MA's own FAQ, their movies are supposed to permanently import to every MA partner service. This is supposed to happen once per titlet by design. (Unlike UV which only technically syncs as opposed to importing.) It won't do it again, if you switch Vudu accounts connected to you MA for example. This is why they limit your account switching to only once every 180 days.

It was like that back in the DMA days, and that policy continued when they switched to MA. Unless something has changed since the last time I checked anyhow. I just tried finding that information on their website again, and couldn't find it anywhere. So it's definitely possible that, that policy has changed. I certainly hope not. It would just be one more example of another bait and switch in the digital world.

You cannot have it connected to another account at the same time.

In MA's terms, I found this: "Each Digital Retailer?s policies and terms of use will determine whether Entitlements shared prior to disconnecting with Movies Anywhere will continue to be available in the Digital Retailer account." So MA will permit a retailer to continue to offer your MA titles after you disconnect, but does not require it.

This is new then from what MA used to state. Another digital bait and switch and just one more example of false advertising.

My standing recommendation is to treat digital like it may not always be there. A $5 Vudu movie is a great deal for me if I want to see it, because I figure "hey, movie tickets cost more". But if I want to truly own something, I get the disc (which usually nets me a digital copy anyways). Digital lockers will always leave us at the whims of the companies running them, but it's in their best interest to try to keep it relatively stable.
