    Comcast Data limits and streaming

    I live in an area with the 300GB data limit which Comcast has instilled. I'm curious for those in the same situation, has this changed your view on digital streaming and has it changed you digital movie buying habits?

    Keep in mind that you can now select your default playback quality now. If you're getting close to the cap, you can have your content start streaming at HD or SD instead of HDX.

      Are they actually enforcing the limit? I had Comcast for a couple years. And there was a 300GB limit, but it was never enforced.

      Anyways, if I had that problem, I would probably look into a business plan that offered more data. I looked into one about a year or two ago, and it wasn't much more than I was already paying. I'd also consider just paying the overage charges. I think that was around 50GB/$10.

      And I'd probably lower my casual watching to 720p.

        Comcast limit was originally 250GB, however since they started the trials in a few areas the limit was changed to 300GB.
        The usage meter page states the enforcement of the old limit is currently suspended for the non test run areas.

        It also states in some testing areas the limit changes based on the speed tier you subscribe to. The two top plans, Blast gets a limit of 450GB, extreme 105 gets a limit of 600GB.

          I have Cox, and I was on their "Ultimate" internet plan, which gave me only 400GB a month, which felt very restrictive in an "internet-everything" household. I pretty much got tired of monitoring my bandwidth usage like a hawk every month, and just went back to having regular cable about a month and a half ago. I also went down two tiers on my internet package.

          Of course, as soon as I plugged back in to the cable company machine, they significantly increased the bandwidth limits. My old tier, Ultimate, now has a whopping 2TB of bandwidth per month. My current tier, preferred, has 350GB. I thought about going back to internet only with the now generous bandwidth limits for Ultimate, but meh. For all the gripes I have with cable (mainly the cost), I can't deny it's very convenient.

          I'm sure I'll go back to internet only someday (likely when Sling TV isn't so restrictive on the DVR capability), but I'm fine for now, as I can finally watch a movie on VUDU, in HDX, without feeling the need to immediately check my usage the following day.

          To answer your other question, no, it has not had any effect on my movie buying habits. The only thing that's slowed down my buying recently is the fact that I just don't have a wishlist of 500 movies anymore. My wishlist is about 75, and that includes movies that won't even be out until much later this year. I'm at a point where I just grab whatever wishlist items are on sale.
