My question is, is there any way to change the location your downloaded movies go to? If so I was thinking a 12tb external may be in my future so I can have a ?safety? backup of my library.

There are some apps, on some hardware, that allow you to download movies for playback (Apple TV and Xbox come to mind), but I imagine that if it would still ping Vudu to verify your license before playback...and if they pull that license, you will have a file you can't play.

If you're stuck with a Windows program that insists on files being located in a specific place, say a folder on the C drive that can't be changed or modified, learn about the "mklink" command. You can create a symbolic link which redirects a folder so that it actually points at a folder on some other drive.

Yes, even downloaded titles will periodically need to have the DRM license refreshed. And in rare cases the streams themselves may need to be refreshed. I wouldn't "download everything" as some sort of backup.

I don't think downloading my movies onto several external hard drives is a practical solution for long term storage even if I make multiple backups. Most hard drives fail eventually and there is just too much data. I actually feel safer with my stuff in the cloud. In the case of Itunes, streaming quality is better than the downloaded copies and that doesn't factor in upgrades or higher quality encodes that are likely to come in the future. The best case solution is for my library to be available on multiple platforms through MA or a similar service.

That said, I have several movies that are Vudu only that are no longer available on digital HD and never had a blu ray release that I wish I could download a copy of. There are also older titles that are being rereleased with altered presentations or new color timing that I'm afraid will replace existing streams.

I actually feel safer with my stuff in the cloud. As Jake said, to play a downloaded copy your computer has to ping Vudu to make sure the license is valid. If the movie has been removed from the service it will be unable to do that and therefore will be unplayable.

In other words, downloading movies to a hard drive is handy to be able to watch movies offline, but it doesnt mean you can use it to keep your collection safe in the event a movie is pulled from the service.

If you want a backup, I would use iTunes to download your movies. Of course that only works on MoviesAnywhere movies, but hopefully Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate with join soon.

When MA popped up I knew it was the future, it wasn't fully there yet but the interface was clean and fully supported. Now we have 4k support finally. Sharing is dead unfortunately across any platform (unless you share your account info, better trust that person fully).

UV is finally dying off, and we just need a real solution for TV shows.
