Able to Rent HDX, but only buy in SD???

Why are some movies only able to be purchased in a lower definition, but are able to be rented in a higher definition of HD or HDX?

1st movie I saw this on was "the cell".
Since I mentioned it on this forum, it has strangely become only available to rent in SD.
That wasn't the answer I was looking for.

Now I see it again in the movie Shattered(1991, Tom Beringer, not the Pierce Brosnan one).
It's available to rent in HDX but only purchase in SD.

What's the likelihood of getting it purchased in HDX and why the difference if not?

Same reason as talked about every weeks. It's in the studios hands. If it was available to Vudu they would most likely have it.

Legal Rights / Contracts. Can't be sold in HD. Exclusive in HD somewhere else. Sale rights owned by different studio. All sorts of weird things.

Not that it's necessary related but sometimes you see the movie was never released again after DVD so there isn't an HD blu-ray version. If might be available in HD for rent but not own because it's not even available on disc in HD. In this case The Cell just came out on blu-ray a few months ago and Shattered (91) is coming out on bluray next week.

Shattered has now become available to purchase in HD, but The Cell still has not.

Unfortunate because The Cell is a movie that deserves to be viewed in HD.

Two other titles you can rent or D2D in HDX, but can only buy in SD are:

        BALTO (1995) (VUDU ID 5145)
UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT (1974) (VUDU ID 9935)

I believe UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT incorrectly delivers an SD license when you D2D it in HDX, as well.
