Re: Vudu UHD 4K is here!

I'm glad that Vudu's UHD website indicates "All VUDU UHD movies are mastered in stunning 4K resolution." because I recently started watching "Hitch" which is supposed to be in UHD on AIV for free to Prime members and it didn't look any better than a 1080p movie. Needless to say, I didn't watch it past the first minute or two.

Your 4k streaming experience is what I have been hearing from others - that 4k streaming (so far) is more equivalent to the quality of a well mastered Bluray, and seemingly not 4k. Still, an improvement over standard streaming though.

I hope Vudus 4k stream quality will blow away the competition.

If anyone can let us know their Vudu 4k experience, please do

I just checked on UVCentral, and UHD has been added to the spec. Why do you think it's not added?

But I also agree with the other post- UV needs to work with the studios to come to some form of agreement for digital UV upgrading for titles you already have in your collection SD>HD>UHD.

I hope they make it happen as I don't see most people paying fully price for a UHD film if they already have in HD(X).

Who knows some of the 4k movie screens I've seen show UV logo on them. Don't know if that means you buy the UHD that it's HD/HDX supported for UV or UHD is actually part of UV.

Is that the same website as UV Desmystified? I see a little info at UVDemystified about UHD. I don't consider it an official source though. If not, can you post the link?

UVDemystified is as close to an official source as you can get. It is maintained by the lead technologist at Sonic, which owns Rovi, the company that created the original uvvu.com website.

                  UV Specs are posted online:
                  http://www.uvcentral.com/specs

You can get there from uvvu.com, just look for the "For Business" link at the bottom of the page. Click on the Technical Specifications link. uvvu.com also changed to myuv.com, but both url's work fine.

                  Very dry reading.

I was happy to finally see updates on the FAQ. It seemed like he'd lost interest once they changed direction.

There already is some feedback over on AVS forum from somebody who compared the 4k version with the Blu-ray and he claimed to have seen an improvement.

Not too bad for brand new technology like this!

Thanks, yeah that is as dry as can be!

Good news is it seems to be confirmed - word on the street is that UHD D2d via VUDU already is activated.

I don't know details but it seems the two Sherlock Holmes titles can be done from home. I have heard Lego Movie (and perhaps the others they are currently offering) are also eligible, but discs have to be brought in-store. It seems it will work the same way as previously. $2 to go from Bluray to UHD. IF in-home, if you upgrade 10 or more the 50% discount should apply. No Digital to Digital upgrade yet.

It also seems that when the studios deliver their films in 4k to VUDU, all of them will be eligible for UHD D2d (as long as they are UV of course) , but if they are a newer title like Kingsman, you will have to convert in-store, as newer discs do not read for the home service (if it worked for previous HD conversion, it will work again). Most films from 2013 or so and older should work for home conversion.

I have not confirmed, but SD to UHD should also be available, I imagine for $5 per pop.

That's ok but the 5 titles I have already on the 12 movie list are mostly from UV codes or direct VUDU purchases. :/

The weird thing for me is that when I check the movies that I own in HDW is says I also own UHD and I didn't buy then in HDX or do D2D. So do HDX purchasers get UHD by default ?

That would be great - I hope so!!!! When you stream it, is your TV indicating a true 4k stream is running from them?

Thats the hard part. The Roku is currently connected to a 1080p. The other 4k displays in the house are older and not hdmi 2.0 or hdcp 2.2 so I don't know that they will work with the Roku 4 in 4k either.

I bought Edge of Tomorrow in UHD and compared it to the Blu-ray. It's a marginal visual improvement. Nothing that'll blow you away though since the Blu-ray already looked so good. I wish I had Dolby Atmos capability. The audio may actually be the bigger upgrade with these VUDU UHD titles(aside from San Andreas which I believe already has Atmos on the Blu-ray).
