I wish there was a Vudu appliance for uncompressed downloads

Kaleidescape has a fantastic new product line that allows you to download bit-perfect Blu-ray quality copies of any UV movies you have. The Alto player can hold 100 movies at a time. There are also Terra movie servers that can hold 600 Blu-Ray quality films and Strato players that can hold 150. The problem is that these things are absolutely, stupidly expensive. We're talking $2500 for the Alto, $4500 for the Strato (which does UHD) and $8000 for a Terra.

It seems to me that there are plenty of other companies with the chops to accomplish the same thing at a MUCH lower price point and Vudu is one of them. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be enormously interested in local storage of much higher bit-rate movies with Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support.

I am very new here, and I signed up mainly to read about how to get the best possible quality from vudu so I fully support your request.

Right now 4k streaming allows for the best quality but I already noticed that quality varies depending on the time of the day that I am playing a movie. It would be much nicer to have a high quality download option to enjoy our movies in the highest possible quality irrespective of internet speed or the time of the day and no matter if they are SD, HDX or UHD.

I also downloaded some movies on the PS3 and they look better downloaded than streamed - on a bigger TV the difference is easily visible.

The real difference boils down to the fact that even the best streamed 1080p content has a bit-rate of maybe 10-12Mbps, while actual Blu-Ray is closer to 40. Then there is the fact that none of the streaming services support the lossless audio tracks, which definitely make a difference if you have a decent sound system. All of this is due to bandwidth constraints. Downloads solve these problems. Unfortunately, the only uncompressed download solution for UV that is currently on the market is Kaleidescape, which is very expensive, does not have agreements with some of the smaller studios and is not part of DMA. Vudu has the content.

I've been keeping my eye on Vidity and am hoping to see a lot more at CES next year.

To me vudu is in a perfect position to bring us a high quality solution.
They have the content and they already allow for HDX downloads on some devices like the PS3.

I'd like to hear from them how they see the situation and the chances to bring us higher quality downloads both in 4k/UHD and 1080p.

I still have my Vudu boxes from the beta testing years ago before Wal-Mart purchased them. Both boxes still work and the remote is a joy to use. The picture and sound quality were amazing but at the time the complaint everyone had was that the hardware did not allow for extra storage and so it was limited in the number of movies one could purchase. I would love for them to make a new box just as the old one but for UHD downloads much like the WD My Passport Cinema used to download Vidity HDR UHD movies from MGo. If they would bring back the old Vudu Box with a larger drive and newer HDMI standard I would be in heaven.

That sounds like a plan, a good alternative would also be to allow us to connect an external drive like the Sony FMP-X10 does. That seems to work very well and one could go to up to 8 TB of storage with one drive - that should be enough for a few hundred movies.

Meh. I'm not going to begrudge you your preferences. I also loved my Vudu STBs...however, IMO the Roku's 4-directional remote is preferable to the Vudu scroll wheel because it allows for zipping up and down large lists more effectively. Plus, now I have one box to rule them all...er, to watch Vudu, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and Plex on, instead of one box that only does one thing well. (Those Vudu "apps" were basically clip compilations. They didn't even have YouTube on there by the time I gave up on them!)

Edit: Then again, I have a reliable 50/25 connection, so I'm not worried about downloading. Well, I do keep some movies downloaded on my laptop for when I travel, but the app has nothing to do with the STB.

So...you want to buy my BX1000?

What I am looking for is simply better quality. Internet bandwidth is not a problem for me. What I want is Blu-Ray quality picture and sound when watching movies on my main system.
