    The Mask of Zorro 4K picture quality

    I was watching Zorro 4K the other day, and noticed the picture quality of the movie was quite poor. It definitely looks like it's a 4K movie, but after comparing to the versions on Movies Anywhere and iTunes, the version on Vudu is inferior to those. There's much more grain in the picture quality compared to the others. It's disappointing because Vudu's the only one that offers the movie in Dolby Vision, while iTunes and MA only offer it in HDR10.

    I watch on an LG C8 OLED TV and use the exact same video settings for all three streaming services.

    Is it just me or have other people noticed this too?

    Grain is inherent in the original film, it has nothing to do with the transfer. I bought this in iTunes & watched it on Vudu yesterday (LG B7A OLED), I thought the film looked great, especially with the inclusion of DV. If you don't like film grain then watch it elsewhere, but to me this is a more accurate version than the others.

      Without a subjection review of all the versions it's hard to form an opinion. But there was a great Tom Scott video on YouTube that talked about why music videos from the 80's look worse in HD. It going into source material, conversion method etc.

      Cutting to the quick if this wasn't remastered from the original film it could have been upscaled (here or elsewhere) which provides a sharper picture but adds more noise in other ways. It's all a balancing act.

      Doesn't necessarily apply here but gives a quick and high level insight in conversion of old material.

      Worth a watch.

        I noticed some pixelation and rainbow effect at times on character's faces -- it reminded me of when I have tried watching UHD + HDR on FandangoNow which is bad due to the bit rates I believe. Please bump up those bit rates!

          In fact, we have started encoding some UHD at higher bitrates if necessary.

          We are looking into this specific title (Mask of Zorro) to see if there is a newer source available. Generally the grain/noise matches the source we received, and our goal is match the master as closely as possible, not filter out noise or grain. That said, I believe we are trying to tweak some things to improve overall quality a bit, as well as adding Atmos audio.

            Jake I really appreciate your response and am happy that you guys at Vudu care about the picture and audio quality of your movies and not just that it's just labeled UHD.
