Sony UHD Titles Only Play In HDX

Apologies for not finding anything in a search somehow. I own several Sony titles in UHD, but the highest quality it will play is HDX. Not quite sure what is happening but it is only Sony titles - and not all of them (for example, The Karate Kid is UHD and plays in UHD, but Close Encounters, no matter what version, is UHD and plays HDX).

These are mostly titles that I had owned previously in HDX but upgraded when I got the 4K discs. They all say I own UHD now, but why won’t they play in UHD?

    Thanks.

It is possible that your uhd rights were transferred into vudu via ultraviolet. Upon the closure of uv vudu imported the uv ownership database and for titles that they didn't have the 4k files to they are holding your 4k rights until Sony provides them with the uhd files.

While this may seem odd it is actually a great thing because the alternative was your 4k rights may not have transferred at all.

With these placeholder titles I believe if you scroll down on the title page it will show you own uhd rights but vudu can only playback HDX for now.

Close Encounters was one of many that had UHD rights ported into Vudu as UV shut down. It won't stream in UHD until Vudu gets the rights and encodes from the studios. Once that happens you will automatically be able to stream in UHD.

I suggest tweeting or emailing the studios to encourage them to add UHD encodes to Vudu.

That is truly weird! I guess we’ll just wait and see then! I just put in the code for the 4K Philadelphia and that shows “You own HDX” when it was 4K on the other Movies Anywhere services (that I use, like MA and iTunes). Appreciate your street smarts here.

whisper3978 When UltraViolet closed, Vudu made sure to mark any titles that you owned in the highest quality owned in the UV library, that way you wouldn't have been screwed out of that higher quality once Vudu added that title in the higher quality.
