Which devices support both 4k/Dolby Vision and Vudu?

I'm confused around the whole issue of streaming Dolby Vision. Which devices support both Dolby Vision and have a Vudu app?

It seemed like Amazon Fire Cube was good (supports Dolby Vision) but then I see where it doesn't have a Vudu app.

The Apple TV 4K does.

I'm sure some Roku devices probably do too, but I don't know which ones, as my TV is a Roku TV.

Thanks. And of course it would be the most expensive device around that does both Roku's standalone devices sadly don't support Dolby Vision, only HDR10.

I knew some didn't, but didn't realize all of them did.

Maybe you can find a good deal on an ATV4K. A purchase right now gives you a free year of Apple TV+ too. Subscribers to it (even the ones getting the free year) are eligible for a CBS All Access/Showtime bundle subscription for $9.99, so there might be a value there for you that would help you justify the costs.

The Apple 4K TV is great. It's worth it, but I know it's expensive.

For standalone devices, you are looking primarily at the Apple TV and the Nvidia Shield. There are rumors that Google may be launching a new Chromecast device that runs the Android TV OS, so that may be a future option if the rumors are true.

For TVs, there are some great options. Many 2019/2020 Roku TVs support 4K Dolby Vision and have the Roku OS built in. This means that you can stream 4K Dolby Vision using Roku channels/apps like Vudu, Movies Anywhere, Apple TV app, Prime Video, Netflix, etc. Personally, I recommend the TCL 6-Series if you are in the market for a new affordable TV.

Roku TV's support Dolby Vison, or at least some of them do. There is no reason that the Roku Ultra can't do DV along with HDR10 but sadly it doesn't.

I prefer my Roku Ultra over my Apple TV, especially for Vudu since the Vudu app on ATV is very stripped compared to Roku one. I understand the ATV Vudu app can't have the rent and buy buttons, which I'm fine with, but it's also missing a lot of functionally the Roku and most other devices has.

Another little wrinkle is the IMAX Enhanced format. Currently only Fandango NOW supports it. But for any MA titles that is only an minor inconvenience. Unfortunately only Sony TV’s currently support IMAX on FN, but they do make some of the best TV’s, at a higher price that is. However, I would expect it to roll out to other TV’s eventually. I doubt it will roll out to streaming boxes considering the tight control on standards. It’s should be noted that IMAX Enhanced is supposed to be their answer to Dolby Vision which is considered one of the best, if not the best HDR standard. IMAX Enhanced to supposed to exceed DV in general, or at least for IMAX movies.

Unfortunately there is HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, Advanced HDR, Advanced HDR (Techicolor) Enhanced IMAX and who knows how many others. No one device or TV supports all. Find a streaming box and TV (or combined unit) that supports the greatest number, most popular, or ones you want.

I believe the Sony UUBP-X800M2 (whatever the recent model number is - not the original X800?) and the UBP-700 BD players also support Dolby Vision (it works well, we sometimes use it as our reference player connected to LG OLED displays). Though at that price unless you are a big Ultra Blu-Ray fan, it may not be the most cost-effective solution vs an Apple TV, Shield, or even Xbox1 S/X...

What TV do you use with Dolby Vision, and what don't you like about the apps? (just curious) I have a half dozen devices with Vudu apps plugged into my LG OLED, but I usually just use the LG app, works fine for me.

Just to clarify something Snewts posted earlier, most Roku TVs do support 4K w/ both HDR and Dolby Vision, however, Dolby Vision is NOT supported via the Movies Anywhere app on Roku devices.

AFAIK any TV "high end" enough to support Dolby Vision would be a "Smart TV", so would have apps on it (and of course without a Dolby Vision capable display a streaming box won't support DV anyway). Not surprisingly I have an absurd number of devices at home that can stream (as I'm sure do many people) - so I was curious what the main factors are that those with multiple streaming-capable devices use to choose their go to one... (for Vudu or other services)

This doesn't really apply to VUDU, since VUDU doesn't support it, but I really enjoy having the "Up Next" feature on the Apple TV.

VUDU, Netflix, and a few other apps don't work with it, but it's great with Amazon Prime, Peacock, Hulu, Apple TV+, CBS All Access, Showtime, Hallmark Movies Now, etc. do. It's great to set up shows and movies to remember to watch later. I did that with a Movie from Amazon I had set up to remember to watch yesterday.

The Vudu app on the TCL Roku TV isn't as fast as the Roku Ultra and as well as being less stable. Since unfortunately the Roku Ultra doesn't support Dolby Vision for whatever reason I use the app on the Roku TV for Dolby Vision. Otherwise I use the app on the Roku Ultra connected to the Roku TV. I had hoped I wouldn't have to use the Ultra after getting the Roku TV but it just doesn't work as well as the standalone hardware.

So basically I use the Apple TV for everything except Vudu. I use the Roku Ultra for all Vudu except Dolby Vision. I use the Roku TV for Dolby Vision.

It's sad I have to shuffle though three devices to get full performance on Vudu.

on Apple TV it only included My Vudu, Free, Search and Settings.

Everything under Spotlight: various Deals, various Franchises, numerous Collections as well as everything under Movies and TV that are in the Roku and most other platform apps in absent. Like most of the filtering is missing as wel. Apple TV Vudu app is pretty much as stripped down as you can get.
