Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
Subtitels support will only require a sw update, so your current box is all you need. The text will be rendered with the same mechanism as the current UI graphics.

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
There's a number of other threads related to this subject. The issue is somewhat technical - it's not just as easy as adding a subtitle track to a DVD. It is indeed something that Vudu wants to add (at least that's my impression) but there are other, higher priority items before this such as getting the kinks out of playing HD, making some UI improvements, adding more and better movies to the database, etc.
I am sure that at some point captioning will be available. I agree - it would be nice to have.

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
New user, and very very pleased with my box! But I think this thread is about what we want more from it, and I am not sure that Vudu understands just how much it is losing with no subtitles.
My wife has some kind of hearing problem that I honestly don't understand. It just freaks me out sometimes. If you don't speak in a TV accent (what I call it), she doesn't understand you. What that means is basically if you have a southern accent or a hispanic accent or a New England accent or ANY accent that isn't what I call the standard American "TV" accent, she is just going to look at you blankly and ask me what you said. It is truly ridiculous. She simply cannot watch Braveheart or The Queen or Once Upon a Time in Mexico or any movie like that. She HAS to have the subtitles.
On a more real note, my Grandfather is functionally deaf. He also has to have the subtitles. And oh yeah, I have a 23 m/o and a 3 w/o who both like to scream. I like them a lot too.
I have seen many ask for subtitles, and argue for their necessity. What I have not seen is anyone with authority state whether it is POSSIBLE with an update. I understand that this machine is updatable and advertised as having many new features coming soon. Is this possible with an update, and is it on Vudu's todo list? I know I can't expect a date, but can I get a "if you keep your box for 10 years, your current box will support it"?

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
Tell ya what, I've never gotten into a show like 24 and it's sorta too late now unless I spend a fortune on DVD sets. If Vudu offered shows like that and Lost, etc. that you have to watch from day one, I just might get hooked on some new shows!Originally posted by sgoldblatt View PostTV Shows would be the killer content, if I may say so myself.
This would be nice...

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
I can see the natural tendency to imagine merging the capabilities of Tivo and Vudu. I have both of them and, so far, I still see them as different. I too am tempted to imagine the combination but I'm not sure it is the right thing. I think the Tivo interface is really good for what it does (and not so good for finding movies via Unbox). I also think the Vudu interface is really good at what it does. I'm not sure that the different interfaces really go together all that well. I will concede that I'm not a UI guy and someone could show me something that changed my mind.

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
TV Shows would be the killer content, if I may say so myself. One of the reasons for that I have been so hooked to my TiVo is for its "seamless" integration with Amazon Unbox, but what if there had to be no "seamless integration?" What if it was all there on VUDU, and wait for it... We did not have to wait for it to download, etc. etc. TV content would be a huge boost for VUDU in the consumer market and truly make it a worthy competitor to TiVo/Unbox, Apple TV, and others (note: VUDU is already great, IMHO). TV Shows would make me use VUDU 4-5 times a week, instead of the 1-2 I now use it.

Look, I'm well aware of the 30-day back gaurantee and I know I can sell the box. Your "options" sounded more like "stop complaining and don't use the forums" .... anyway, my apologies ... I'll just sit back and wait, I know Vudu is working hard to improve the product.Originally posted by gregg098 View PostSucks how you give people options and they just try to get after you for it. TV shows for Xmas!Originally posted by NA9D View PostI'm really surprised no one has mentioned that TV shows would be nice for Christmas. Would be really nice if Vudu could start getting some current run content or even older series. I'd love it if I woke up Christmas morning and found the StarTreks and Babylon 5 all available! Who knows if the TV guys will sign on to such an offering...
i would like to strongly support this concept... at the risk of being repetitive. Having TV shows on VUDU is the last hurdle to me cancelling Netflix
i'm having a fine time with the current movie content, but sometimes during the week, I need a 60 minute video bite.

Re: What I want for Christmas Vudu
We don't have kids either so I like to watch the new releases as soon as their available to rent. We started renting from Netflix, Redbox and Tivo. We average about 3 to 4 movies a week.Originally posted by mbustin View PostI do keep tabs on what's coming out every Tuesday and if there's something I'm interested in, I'll pick it up and watch it sometime during the week. That means we might average 2 movies a week which doesn't seem like obsessive behavior to me.
We don't have kids and we watch very little network TV, so we do have more time for movies. I guess that's why we look forward to new releases more than most here ...
I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard, so you don't need to paint me as an obsessive-compulsive ... perhaps just a reluctant malcontent waiting for better Vudu days ...

Mbustin,Originally posted by mbustin View PostAnyway, I think it's a good thing if Vudu hears from some of the users that want improvement and hear it more than once, from more than one person they might might be inclined to apply more resources to resolve shortcomings... but that's just my opinion.
The issue is not that you have stated what you want and what you don't like. The problem is that have done it over and over and over and over and over and over again. MOVE ON!
There is NO ONE and I guarantee you NO ONE on this forum who wants the current rental situation to stay the same. I would say that there is NO ONE at Vudu who wants this either. But the business models at the studios are very complex and it isn't so easy as snapping one's fingers to make it happen. That is all I can say about it at this time but it's something that is being worked on.
So every Vudu employee and every Vudu customer in the world agree with you. YOU ARE RIGHT. However, you keep bringing it up and bringing it up and bringing it up.
This horse is dead and has been beaten enough. This dog won't hunt.
One of the forum policies is to not continue to bring up old issues and beat dead horses. It's not a matter of allowing or not allowing dissent. We all agree but it gets tiring to hear how horrible the Vudu product is for you because rental timelines don't fit into your schedule. Again, I'm sorry it's not more to your sense of instant gratification.
I don't consider ANY one product to be my only source of entertainment. I have CableTV, CATV VOD, Internet Radio, ripped MP3s, CDs, DVDs, Digital Media Player to play DVDs I've ripped, Vudu, Internet Video, AppleTV, etc. Each device brings a slightly different flavor or capacity to the party. I don't foresee the day yet that I can toss all but one of them out the window.
As I've asked before, please be patient with this product. It's brand new and is working in an industry hostile to new technology - especially new technology that is using file sharing over the internet. It will take TIME to change the business model.
I think this is the NUMBER 1 complaint about the product. It is at the top of my list and I'd be happier if it was fixed. However, I don't whine about it here or in the beta test forums because my objection to this was said and noted months ago. Now, I move on and figure out how to best fit the box into my needs and enjoy it. Please, let's move on.

You know, of course I'm aware of the 30-day return period, thanks for enlightening me. You do have a talent for regurgitating the obvious. I know what forums are for - debate and discussion, in addition to giving and getting advice. If you don't like other's opinions including "whiners" - that's your problem ... now go run along Greggy ....Originally posted by gregg098 View PostYou know, if your unhappy, get rid of it and stay away from the forums. Thats what the 30 day guarantee is for. Dont come complaining here and then get mad when someone offers you advice. That is the whole point of the forums. None of us want to hear whiners here.
Anyway, I think it's a good thing if Vudu hears from some of the users that want improvement and hear it more than once, from more than one person they might might be inclined to apply more resources to resolve shortcomings... but that's just my opinion. If every forum goer is a happy camper, willing to sit back and passively wait, rather than spur Vudu on, well, so be it ...
