Are 3D movies going away

3D movies on Vudu have always been expensive, never on sale, and/or forcibly bundled with the regular HDX copy of the movie. Recently I noticed the 3D movies on my wishlist have disappeared. Is Fandango stopping support for 3D movies?

While my answer is not an official answer, it seems they no longer offer them for sale or rent, yet if you purchased them, they are still in your library.

3D is largely dead, at least in the United States. Basically no modern tv has come with 3D for years. One of the few options is front projectors that still have 3D support. Very few disc players are still on the market. Very few 3D movies are released on 3D anymore. Even in theaters most 3D showings are usually at odd times. In China for example sample though it’s still huge where movies are in 3D there but not elsewhere in the world.

Vudu has basically dropped all support for their app on older TVs, and only older TVs are the only ones with 3D built in. On older TVs and Projectors that offer 3D you would need an external device to act as a player but most don't support 3D (ie. Roku, Firestick, Vudu Stick, etc). The XBOX app still supports 3D last I checked, but they have dropped support for older XBOX units and only the current gen is still supported.

Vudu missed an opportunity with 3d movies in VR. They released an app for Quest but is was so badly designed and unstable no one really used it. Then with minimal updates they let it fester until usage dropped so low they could kill it off (though in effect they already had by not actively updating it). They could have partnered with another app like Bigscreen for VR to get to not only the Quest but PC VR and other standalone Quest competitors. They also block you from doing VR in a web browser even when you have a 3d display and their Windows "app" is just their website now and they even stripped offline downloads from that which means you need to use something like Microsoft, Amazon, or iTunes to download movies for travel (though their app was never all that reliable and would lock as soon as it sensed you were connected to the internet outside the continental USA).

So, in short, they aren't likely to give anyone their money back on 3D titles they already own and remove them from your library. Instead, they are just more likely to sit there and be increasingly unwatchable until the next company buys Vudu and sees a business opportunity. Then again when Fandango bought M-Go they simply rebranded it and removed the features that made it unique, then let it age and die until they bought something else to replace it.

Luckily in my case ai didn’t pay for a single 3D title; they were all free redemptions from purchased discs.
