    Bring back the HD option! (Felipe, please read)

    Four classic Universal Monster titles:

    Frankenstein
    The Mummy
    The Invisible Man
    Creature From the Black lagoon

    Are all shown in the wrong aspect ratio in the HDX format. They are stretched from a 4:3 aspect ratio to a 16:9 which creates a 'funhouse mirror' effect. All four of these films are in the correct aspect ratio in the SD format. So HDX, which is supposed to be the BEST possible version of the film) is actually the WORST for these four films.

    Here is the kicker....Vudu used to offer three formats: SD, HD, and HDX. These four films were all in the correct aspect ratio in the HD format. Therefore if you wanted to watch these films in high definition on Vudu, the solution was to watch in HD as opposed to HDX. About a year ago Vudu stopped selling HD and only began offering HDX. This worried me specifically because of the Universal monster issue. I opened a ticket to express my concern. The ticket is reference # 160813-000887.

    In response to my ticket on 08/13/2016 at 06:24 PM I received a response by Richard B in Vudu customer service. Richard said that "HDX purchases still give you access to SD, HD, and HDX, we're simply removing the HD option from the storefront because it causes a lot of confusion - especially because HD and HDX costs the same amount, and HDX offers you HD playback anyway." -- what Richard said was true until very recently. Sadly the option to watch in HD has in fact gone away leaving me with only two options for these four films: Watch them in a lesser format like SD despite the fact that I supposedly own them in High Def or Watch a distorted image in HDX.

    Honestly this is bad for both Vudu and Universal Studios. Please bring back the HD versions of these four films!

    I would like to suggest that an easier solution for Vudu to implement would be to request new encodes in 4:3 from Universal for those films so they can be watched in the highest quality possible while maintaining the correct aspect ratio.

      The goal shouldn't be for Vudu to get the 4:3 versions in HD, but in HDX...

        i agree but sadly Vudu doesn't seem to give a damn about aspect ratio issues. This is the response I got on a ticket that I opened:

        "Hello

        I hope this email finds you well,

        Thank you for contacting VUDU customer care. I do apologize for the inconvenience regarding this case. Unfortunately the VUDU service does not maintain the aspect ratio for films as these are set and controlled by the movie studios. We do apologize again for any inconvenience this has caused."

        I almost feel like we have to choose our battles- the aspect ratio issue seems like a losing battle when it comes to new encodes but this is an incident where they already had the HD version right and then took it away

          I noticed this with the movie "Triangle" which never had an HDX encode, but only HD. When the HD playback option disappeared, this movie was unable to be played. Vudu has refunded my purchase and I still own the title in SD. It is a pain in the *** to watch in SD, even if I wanted to. I have to first change my "default playback" to SD in order for it to be recognized & stream. Then after viewing, I have to switch playback option back to HDX.

            Wow - I bought Triangle a long time ago (not sure if it was HD or HDX, but based on your post it must've been HD). I just read your post and checked my library. I don't even have Triangle in my library anymore. Doesn't matter what I set my default playback to, it has simply vanished ... which is unacceptable. With over 7,000 movies in my library, there's no way I could ever notice a few titles missing and of course, Vudu never emails you a receipt with titles listed (except D2D) when you make a purchase, so you can never go back to search your email. When you called Vudu to verify a title you purchased, they pretty much have to comb through database records a page at a time to find it ... I have well over thousand pages in my account history, and I know from past experience what a futile and frustrating effort this is!

            Wonder how many other titles Vudu just decided to remove from my library without telling me?! 😡

              Hoepefully vudu shouldn't need to request a new source file from the studio for any of those 4 monster movies since the SD and HD encodes were fine.

              Even in the unlikely event vudu receives a different prores master for each resolution, it seems so crazy that Universal Studios created a special "stretched/wrong aspect ratio" master specifically for vudu when they have a great Blu-ray master in the correct AR. It might have just been an error in the encoding profile used for the HDX version (aspect ratio is easily adjusted at time of encoding).

              The customer service rep who replied has no direct interaction with the source material and the encoding process, so might not really know for sure how the process works (but could pass on these types of errors/customer feedback to those who do).

                Because it is no longer purchasable, it will not appear in a search. You have to list your owned movies alphabetically & scroll to the "T's". That is the only way I can find it:

                  I agree. I've been saying for years that these 'stretched from 4:3 to 16:9' encodes must be an error on Vudu's part because it makes no sense that every other service like FandangoNow and CinemaNow would have received the correct HDX encodes and only Vudu got the wrong one but Vudu will take no accountability for the error and has been passing the buck to the studios on these for years.

                  I know of seven films off the top of my head that have this very error on Vudu (the 'stretched' error):

                  Frankenstein
                  Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation
                  Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds on Love
