Re: Apple - Charging Same $ for 4K as HD plus upgrading all HD movies to 4K for FREE!

Looking for some clarity on the Apple 4k topic.

    1) Is apple only giving you UHD when you buy from them direct?
    2) Do you also get UHD when redeeming the iTunes code from the BD/UHD disc package?
    3) Can you use the BD iTunes code and get UHD in iTunes without buying the UHD disc package?

    Likewise
    4) Will Apple be giving us the Sony titles in UHD that currently exclusive to Sony products with UV right now?
    5) Will apple be giving UHD on the FOX titles that only redeem codes for HD with UV at this time?

It's been noted you will need around 15 mb/s to stream 4K content on Apple's TV. Where did you get this statistic about 90% of America doesn't have the bandwidth? Was this an assumption by you? Please cite a reference.

Also, if it's buffering while you watch 4K content, this sounds like a hardware issue within your house. This is not Vudu because it works fine for me and plenty of other users.

Next, if you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4k, it's either a calibration issue or your TV. As I've mentioned before, not all 4K TVs are created equal. Also, you need a TV capable of playing DV for Vudu. It makes all the difference.
Dunnvudu Google is your friend. Just type national average internet speed and you will see nationally the average speed is 18.5 Mbps here's a nice link that proves my point and my speed is not on the lower end and is in fact in line with the national average. Wish I had faster but sadly my area doesn't offer it. Anyway even running 18 Mbps I get buffering from Vudu using an Ethernet connected Roku 4 Ultra hooked up to my Samsung 65KS8500 HDTV so don't think it's a hardware issue. Here's a link with nice charts showing you what the national average is state by state for internet speed and that was the basis of my original post. Yes I know some lucky have ungodly speeds but I was using a national average in my post.

      https://www.recode.net/2017/6/9/1576...nternet-speeds

Your next contention if you can tell the difference between 1080p and 4K (again Google is your friend) this next link has a nice chart and even states (along with hundreds of other links) that even with a 84" screen unless you sit 5.5 feet from the screen you will not notice a difference at all. Btw the average person sits ten feet away from their tv (again Google is your friend) the link has a wonderful easy to understand chart that shows what size tv and how close you would need to sit to see the benefits of 4K

      http://carltonbale.com/does-4k-resolution-matter/

This link is just one of hundreds that all say the same thing. Now if you had read my first post I stated very clearly that resolution isn't the factor here as most can't tell the difference from the average sitting distance but HDR would be the biggest impact. If I were your calibrator I would never tell you to sit closer I would bring my hard drive with 4K YouTube and movie clips and 1080p YouTube and movie clips have you sit at your normal sitting distance and have you tell me which one is 4K and which one is 1080p (something I've done many times to clients) and guess what almost all say they can't tell the difference unless we are talking projector based systems but those with TV's 65" or smaller (as I also stated in my original post) cannot tell the difference. As mentioned when you add HDR then that changes everything but a straight 1080p to 4K resolution test and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Our eyesight just isn't that good from a normal sitting distance.

I think SD will go away with the exception of a few titles that haven't been released in HD. I'm also sure studios don't want to charge SD prices for HD content when customers don't see them at all as being comparable and with blu ray still viewed as a competitive format. It's also worth noting that most films are not available in UHD and this will remain true for the next several years so reducing the purchase price of HD is definitely out of the question.

People have been slow to adopt 4K because 1) there is a relative lack of supply 2) streaming services such as Prime and Netflix offer 4K content for little or no surcharge 3)most customers can't tell the difference with their equipment 4)charging $30 or more per title doesn't make much sense when HDX is still markedly superior to SD and can be obtained for only a little more. Consolidating HD with UHD makes sense in a way since it will entice people to buy or rent more movies period.

If Apple is going ahead with this, it's only logical that every other digital retailer will follow as far as pricing goes. However, the question remains whether our titles will be upgraded in the future. I think that will depend on whether Vudu decides to continue hosting HD titles when UHD versions can be purchased for the same price.

I think Apple has long been eclipsed as a market leader. They kept pushing digital downloads while other services utilized streaming and open systems. Even the name ITunes is severely outdated, with each new release becoming less user friendly and more resource intensive. They do have the advantage of having a massively popular brand but that can only last so long. Their service might be easy to use if you have a Mac or IPhone but for a PC user, it's garbage.

                  Good news!

I added a few new UHD titles to iTunes last night (after adding to UV first) and noticed they were still not showing UHD so I figured it wouldn't be showing until ship date.

                  Nice.

Which Apple TV do you need to have in order to see the UHD titles? I only have the 3 so I may not be able to see them?

                    797 HDX
