    What service will you be using now?

    With the arrival of Movies Anywhere it looks like we are no longer stuck using Vudu to stream our Ultraviolet movies. Nevertheless, I will probably stick with Vudu. As a Prime subscriber I would ideally like to be able to use a single app for all my movies (or at least as few apps as possible since I also have Hulu) but I really hate Amazon's interface (web, mobile, and Roku) and am not a huge fan of their video player either. Vudu isn't perfect but I think I still prefer it over Movies Anywhere, Amazon Video, Google Play, and Youtube. That being said, here are a few things that I really like about Vudu and some things that I would change:

    Compliments:
    • Movies should be laid out in a table (like Vudu, Movies Anywhere, and Google Play), not a row (like Amazon and Youtube).
    • The scene selection feature in Vudu is very nice.
    • Rotten Tomatoes ratings is one of the best things about Vudu.
    • Vudu seems to have the best and most obvious deals (apparently Amazon also has deals but due to the fact that they don't send me weekly emails and the deals section is located at the bottom of the Amazon Video page I only just found out about this recently). I don't use them myself but the free with ads videos feature is pretty cool (personally I prefer what Google does--a couple videos here and there with no ads).


    Suggestions:
    • With Amazon and Google Play the asterisk button on my Roku remote toggles subtitles on and off. As someone who uses subtitles often, the lack of this feature is almost enough to cause me to switch over from Vudu.
    • On mobile, tapping the screen should toggle play/pause.
    • Seeking on Vudu is fine, but I think Movies Anywhere actually does this the best; I like how it shows an array of stills while seeking rather than just a single still.
    • I will probably stick with Roku for the foreseeable future but now that we can watch our movies anywhere, many of the people that chose Vudu previously when forced to choose between Vudu and an Amazon Fire device will be opting for the Fire Stick/TV and using a different streaming service.
    • Currently Arch Linux does not support HDCP. With all other services this means that I can only watch SD video but for some reason with Vudu I cannot watch anything on my laptop/desktop, not even SD.
    • On the website, the fact that I have to click on "Movies & TV" before I can access My VUDU is a minor annoyance.
    • Similar to the above, Movies Anywhere seems to be the only app (both on Roku and Android) that takes me straight to my movies when I open it up without requiring a bunch of navigation. If they haven't already, have your developers read the book Don't Make Me Think (on mobile the options menu has far too many options; just give me a large, obvious button to take me to my movies somewhere on the home screen).
    • Let us unbundle our movies.


    Does anyone else have any thoughts? Which streaming service will you be using now and why?

    As long as it has the best UI, I'll be sticking with Vudu. I've tried the Google Play, Amazon, and FandangoNow apps on Roku, and they all suck. Every now and then I might use the Movies Anywhere app, just because it seems to have a lot more special features for movies than Vudu usually does.

    The one thing I still really want from Vudu is the ability to create our own bundles/folders, and put whatever movies we want in there. I have over 300 items in my list right now, and it's a bit annoying having to scroll down through everything. I can't even imagine what a pain it must be for people with thousands and thousands of movies. Being able to condense our lists by putting movies from the same franchise/director/studio would help a ton.

    If anyone from Vudu reads this, can you tell us why they don't just add this? It seems to be one of the more heavily requested features for years now.

      I'll be sticking with Vudu, as long as the UHD/HDR problem gets fixed with the Chromecast Ultra, that is.

      Vudu has the best UI.
      Vudu has my TV titles that MA doesn't.
      Vudu has all the non-UV/MA titles that I purchased over the years.
      Vudu supports Dolby Vision.
      Vudu has titles that don't yet appear in MA.

      and for one of the biggest reasons....

      Vudu / UV allows me to share my library with up to FIVE people! ( awesome awesome feature !! )

        Me too, I'm sticking with Vudu for the most part except the few titles that I have from other streaming providers. What UHD/HDR problem are you having with Chromecast Ultra? I don't see any problems when watching UHD on this device.

            Absolutely. Vudu UI still far exceeds the UI for the other non-Apple providers. (I can't really speak to Apple's UI because I've never used an AppleTV).

            In terms of sales, I rarely ever see anything remotely matching the good prices found at VUDU. iTunes is still more expensive on everything else but 4k titles, but VUDU has been working to match some of those prices.

            If anything, I hope this Movies Anywhere transition will help Apple and Amazon apologists recognize how truly great VUDU is as a service. I even saw an article yesterday on a Mac site rejoicing that iTunes users could now use VUDU's disc-to-digital service, which again, never having been an Apple apologist, I had been telling them for years was better than overpaying at iTunes.

              For the most part my main tv will be vudu except they still don't have UHD enabled on it (Samsung) so i'll jump to the other apps for UHD support where available. My phone will be vudu, my tablets are Amazon and I have a couple firesticks for my other tvs that will either use the MA app or just the Amazon interface.

              So my usage is completely dependent on what's available on what device and in the best quality.

                Same problem I've been having with it. When trying to watch a UHD title, my tv is triggered into HDR10 mode, which causes it to be unwatchable. ( my AVR does not yet support Dolby Vision passthru )

                  Still Vudu.

                  Vudu has the better interface. Vudu has the better selection of movies. And right now, Vudu still has UV connectivity.

                  I have several Rokus, a couple of Android TV boxes, and a FireTV with Vudu sideloaded. There is no other app I'd rather use for watching my library.

                    I have an AppleTV, a FireTV, and a Roku 3..all hooked up to the same tv and I use all 3 back and forth.

                    The Vudu app on Roku is still my favorite UI, but I will have to say that the actual movie experience is far greater on the Apple TV with iTunes movies...which being able to get so many of my UV movies onto iTunes is really the only thing about MA that I like so far. I am not even an Apple fan..in fact, the Apple TV is the only Apple product I own.

                    The iTunes Extras features is a huge advantage though. Lots of extras (even when Vudu has none), visually pleasing backdrops (many are even animated or include clips), a lot of times the film's music is playing in the background, beautiful layout, and the best streaming quality around. It really is an eye opening experience watching iTunes movies on the Apple TV.

                      Well, I can sure see now that there are not many Apple fans using Vudu! LOL

                      Vudu is still my #1 choice, but I would say that iTunes on the Apple TV is a close second now. The interface on the Apple TV is very good and I do like it better than the Vudu app on the ATV. But most of my Vudu watching is still when using my Tivo because it is a much better app than Vudu on the ATV in my opinion.

                      If Vudu would add some of the most requested features, it would blow the doors off all other apps!

                        I'm sure it depends on the device as people with Apple devices are kinda locked in so they will probalby default to iTunes.
                        Google and Amazon's IU are terrible on the PC, Phone and Xbox (for Amazon) compared to VUDU and they don't have the additional sort options.
                        Movies Anywhere UI is better than VUDU for extras though.

                          Definitely sticking with VUDU until someone comes along and offers something better that actually works.

                          In theory, MoviesAnywhere would be better, but they have a long road ahead to get all the movies that I have in VUDU, I-tunes and amazon to become available in their service, then build a better interface and top it off by making it just as compatible with the different streaming devices.

                          Love the idea, but it seems idealistic right now.

                            Amazon deals are occasionally the same or cheaper than VUDU but Amazon really doesn't make the deals obvious. For instance, Gremlins is on sale for $10 right now on Vudu and $7 on Amazon.

                              And for good reason. Apple not only gave the shaft to all the other digital customers by not honoring 4K upgrades, but they don't even allow them to buy a 4K movie if they already have that title in their library in HD (I'm sure there are some users who don't even know that they are not getting UHD). So much for leading the way on 4K. They are also very restrictive by only developing an app that can be used with their own device. Meanwhile, every other retailer offers an app that can be downloaded on practically any streaming device or smart TV. Besides the big three, customers can also use the MA app, Youtube, or FandangoNow to stream their library.

                              I also don't find their interface to be that impressive unlike many here. The DVD menus where viewers can access bonus features are more like a throwback in this day and age. To be sure, Vudu needs to make more improvements in this area, but having the extras displayed like in MA would be more ideal and more efficient.
