The Fandango at Home Forums are designed to help viewers get the most out of their Fandango at Home experience. Here, Fandango at Home customers may post information, questions, ideas, etc. on the subject of Fandango at Home and Fandango at Home -related issues (home theater, entertainment, etc). Although the primary purpose of these forums is to help Fandango at Home customers with questions and/or problems with their Fandango at Home service, there are also off-topic areas available within the Fandango at Home Forums for users to chat with like-minded people, subject to the limitations below.

    It's pretty clear that they are going to rush a product to market to help get their foot in the door. In doing so they'll likely put out a product that seems beautiful on the surface but will be a dissapointing experience in the real world.

      They've been developing this product for over a year. It hardly seems rushed.
      Regarding still needing a computer - we'll see what the final product looks like. But as netflix says, they want their technology (software) on tons of different set top boxes (xbox 360 for example). If they get netflix watch now on the 360 with a hard drive, no computer should be necessary.

        That isn't clear. They could very well employ the same strategy and funnel all of the movie selection etc. through the computer and have just a common client interface on the XBox that access the computer the same way as any other of their STBs. Just because something shouldn't be necessary doesn't mean it won't.

          The problem with the Netflix model is that w/o a database of content on the local drive, the browsing of content on the STB is very slow. This can be seen with TiVo Unbox, with VOD from your cable company, etc. There's a lot of XML data (or whatever format) that would need to be pulled down and sorted through, etc. in real time. That's why Vudu is so slick - the catalog of movies is stored locally and you can browse through it w/o once having to talk to Vudu's servers.

          Additionally, if Netflix is trying to develop a "universal" interface that could be deployed across many different box types, then things are going to suffer. Not all boxes have hard drives (the LG box announced does not). It would be too difficult to make a movie catalog database for one device but then not for another device, etc. So all devices get driven down to the lowest common denominator for the least capable box in the universe.

            Just curious, do we know if Vudu has applied for patent(s) with regards to the technology you are describing? It would seem like a pretty patentable idea.

              Vudu has several patents covering all aspects of the product. They did a nice job of protecting all aspects of the product that way.

                I figured as much. Companies are very smart about IP nowadays. No one wants to end up like the guy who invented Life Alert (those devices marketed to seniors that call 911 when pressed) and whose idea was copied by a bunch of companies.
