Ratings - WHY is it rated [ ]

As the parent of 2, I would really like it if Vudu would tell me WHY a film (or TV show) is rated PG, PG-13, R, etc. This is something iTunes does already as well as most, if not all, PPV satellite/cable channels.

For example, a movie might be rated PG-13 because of cartoon violence - something I have no problem with for my nearly 11 year old. (for example, Spiderman 1)

Right now, AFAIK it just tells you the rating but it doesn't give you any information beyond that. So if I want to know about a movie or TV show I either have to go online and research it, or I have to buy/rent it and watch it first.

For example, last night I decided to watch the 1st ep. of Firefly - I'd heard it was a cult hit, so I was curious. Thankfully my kids were out of the room when the sex scene hit the screen. Yes, it was a TV show so there was no nudity, but I would have deemed it inappropriate for either of my kids to watch. Additionally some of the language (for example the captain calling one of the girls a "*****") would be totally inappropriate - I really don't need my 5 year old to pick that one up!

Please Vudu, if you want to sell to parents it would really be useful to give us the tools to judge whether or not content is appropriate for our kids.

Well you would of been in the same boat with iTunes, as it is not rated. So you would of had to do your homework either way.

Also, unless you know something I dont know... where in iTunes does it tell you WHY a rating is the way it is?? The most I see is TV-PG, etc for shows, or PG13, etc for movies. Also, didnt they create this whole series of TV ratings just so you would know what is appropriate for your childs age? I mean if it is rated TV-14 dont you think that maybe that did that for a good reason most the times??

Having said all that, I do agree it would be a neat feature, but probably impractical for them to watch ever single show/movie to determine why some ratings group decided to give it a certain rating.

      Actually, AFAIK you're wrong.

Anything that has a movie rating also gives a reason why it's rated that way. If you look at movies in iTunes it says "for sexual situations" or "for intense scenes of violence". If you look on DISH it tells you why a movie is rated a particular way. VUDU doesn't tell you why a movie has a particular rating - that's not good.

As far as TV shows, they have various ratings like Y and TV-MA and then if necessary will start the show with a card saying "the following program contains material not suitable for younger viewers. Parental discretion is advised."

I understand not all TV shows would be covered, but the movie info is already there. For example, I just did a quick search for "The Bourne Identity" on IMDB. Here's what you get:

Rated PG-13 for violence and some language.

Furthermore if you drill into the parental advisory, you get:

      Sex & Nudity

One brief scene of mild sensuality with kissing an brief male semi-nudity.

      Violence & Gore
Some intense sequences of moderate violence with various punches, kicks and throws. Cuts and bruises result from these instances and there is one instance when a person has pen inserted into his hand. Although the result is bloody, there is no injury detail present and the bloody hand is shown only briefly. A character throws himself out of the window and the result is shown very briefly. On several instances characters are shot and there a few fatalities occur through shooting. Again, no injury detail is present. A woman is shown to be shot in the head, but there is no detail in the injury. These scenes of violence are intense and may be unsuitable for children under the age of twelve.

      Profanity
One use of strong language heard and another is mouthed but inaudible. Some occasional mild profanity.

      Frightening/Intense Scenes

Some sequences are suspenseful with a element of sustained peril. The sequences of violence are quite intense.

The info is already out there....

Ok, I see what your talking about now, but that only applies to movies.

Where is the WHY its rated for all those TV shows?? because I cant find a single one that does so far, and you did say "this is something iTunes does already" ???

As for cable/satellite... on DirecTV they might have some warning and/or the rating (ie: TV-14), but I don't see anyplace on any of my guides that tell me WHY a particular tv show got that rating...

As for movies, at least on my DirecTV they dont even give me a rating, just a bunch of cryptic codes like (N, V, etc) which probably indicates nudity and violence. Either way, that only applies to movies, not tv shows like firefly, etc.

Because the TV ratings are much more expanded than movie ratings. They have:

          TV-Y All Children
          TV-Y7 Directed to Older Children
TV-Y7-FV Directed to Older Children - Fantasy Violence
          TV-G General Audience
          TV-PG Parental Guidance Suggested
          TV-14 Parents Strongly Cautioned
          TV-MA Mature Audience Only

Now, that doesn't tell me the content, but it's at least a little more to go on than PG, PG-13.

I am sure that VUDU is working on some UI changes to make TV a bit more navigateable, remember folks that currently TV on the VUDU is "Preview" or a public "Beta" release. The demand was high so VUDU released it early.

Additional metadata that you are seeing in DirectTV, TiVo, iTunes etc, has been licensed. But remember licensing the source such as "Tribune Media Services", and extending the repository takes some time.

That makes sense for TV - but for movies a real UI change needs to happen. One or two lines of info would make a huge difference for parents.

I have posted this same concern in another thread. My 10 year old daughter will often want to see a PG-13 movie. Some movies I feel are okay and some are not. Without the ratings explanation I am in a position to where if I am concerned I know have to watch the movie first then if it is okay watch it again with her. This is an issue with a rental only good for 24 hrs. from the start of the first viewing. True I can find this information elsewhere but I should not have to.
