    classic movie availability

    Greetings,

I have already vented my frustration with the Vudu movie selection -- when I first went live, I didn't realize the extent to which the studios tied your (and every other VOD's) hands. This post is not to complain or otherwise vent -- I am simply trying to understand.

When the Apple movie-rental went live, I was interested to see what movies they would have in their library that Vudu did *not* have -- if any -- or vice versa. I would've expected them to have at *most* what Vudu has, certainly fewer movies because Vudu has over 5,000.

The first thing I did when I turned my Vudu on initially was search for one of my favorite movies -- Good Will Hunting. I was very disappointed to not find it (which is what sent me on my quest to find *any* of my favorite movies) and which ultimately led to my frustration post. So naturally, the first movie I searched for on iTunes was Good Will Hunting, and voila -- it's there. Purchase only for $9.99.

I'm trying to get a grasp on just how much the limited Vudu selection has to do with studio licenses and how much it has to do with other reasons. I was under the impression Vudu made available -- within a reasonable time frame -- EVERY movie that the *studios* made available digitally. Well, clearly Good Will Hunting is one of these movies, and Vudu doesn't have it. Why?

I realize this is just one movie -- and most of my other favorite movies I searched for on iTunes were nowhere to be found (much to my relief). And I also realize this movie isn't *everyone's* favorite movie -- but I'm trying to get a handle on why certain movies aren't available, and Good Will Hunting's presence on iTunes adds to the confusion...

The problem is not Vudu not making content available. It's with the studios licensing the content. I would not expect all content to necessarily be available to all VOD providers. Good Will Hunting was released by Miramax. I am not 100% certain if Vudu has an agreement with them yet.

Studios handle things differently from studio to studio. Sony Pictures pretty much only allows purchase. Disney allows only rentals. Warner Brothers is now allowing rentals and purchase on the day or release. Each one does it differently and there are different licenses to be obtained for purchase and for rental.

Again, if the studios licenses the content to Vudu, it will be available on the box.

While it would be logical to think that studios/distributors/content providers would allow rental/purchase of same set of titles on al platforms, it doesn't appear to be the case. Looking from the outside in, it seems that each company (Vudu/Apple/Microsoft) strikes separate deals and while general terms seem to be the same (e.g. 30 days/24 hours), there may be wiggle room with regards to titles.

For example, Vudu has exclusive rights to some HD movies, like Star Terk ones (not sure if there are more).

Ah, that could very well be the reason... I didn't realize this.

        Thanks,

Figuring out who owns rights to what is a pain, especially with TV shows where a show might be shown on one network but actually made by another, e.g. "Scrubs" is on NBC but it's produced by someone else (ABC, I think).

That's actually one of the reasons most places (iTunes, Xbox Live, Vudu) are only limited to the US -- international rights are often handled by other companies which is why some HD-DVD-only titles are available on imported Blu-Ray and vice versa.
