Vudu can easily become a great service!

Like any service provider, VUDU must continue to evolve to survive. I think Vudu and a really good service and they seem to already have a really good foundation. But as customers continue to demand more functionality and control over their content they must be able to deliver.

Here are a few simple things Vudu could do to improve (most have already been mentioned by other customers):

    1. We need the ability to sort our video library ("My Movies" and "My TV" under the "My Vudu" tab). This is functionality that should already be there, and as pointed out by others, it's functionality that can easily be added.

    2. We need a way to view new releases for Disc to Digital. That is, we need a way to view what movies have been made available and the list should be sorted by the date it was made available for Disc to Digital.

** number 1 and 2 could be combined - VUDU could implement a sorting and filtering option for My Movies, My TV, and My Wish List (and update the Browsing to match this functionality). If we could sort each list by title, by date added to the list, by date available for D2D, or by release date then this would deliver the functionality needed. For example, if you could sort your Wish List by "date available for D2D" then you would see movies recently made available (sorted most recent to oldest) and any movie not available for D2D would be filtered from the list.

    3. We need the ability to stream on Android devices. After all, there are more Android devices in use than Apple. I have heard that they are working on this, but that was several months ago.

    4. More control over which movies can be viewed on devices in our home. Some PG-13 movies may be okay for children while others are not. I think we need to be able to pick and choose which movies can be viewed on the various televisions and devices. I have this same issue with Netflix. I want to be able to have control over what my kids are watching and not the movie industry's rating system.

My Parental Control settings restrict PG-13 movies. However, there are some PG-13 movies I would like to allow my kids to watch. There may also be PG movies that I may want to restrict.

    5. The Disc to Digital service at Walmart is really nice, but television shows are missing. It would be nice if we could convert many of our television shows so we could watch them in the cloud also.

    6. The prices to rent a movie still seems high to me. It seems strange to me that companies like Vudu, Amazon, and CinamaNow can?t compete with RedBox. I haven?t rented many movies on Vudu because I can get about 3 movies from RedBox for the same price that I rent a single movie from Vudu. I don?t mind paying a little more for Vudu rentals simply because of the extra convenience, but I feel Vudu overcharges for rentals by about $2.00.

    7. It would be nice if they could display the little UltraViolet logo over the movie when you are browsing. This way we can see what is available for D2D without having to either click on the movie or enter the title into the Convert DVDs section to see if the title shows up.

    8. Allow our logon information to be stored so we don't have to enter our email address and password each time we visit this website.

    9. Communicate with customers regarding new functionality being developed and being considered. We are paying for more than just movies here...we are paying for the whole experience of using their software. Other companies do this, even Netflix say they do it (even though I have never seen one of their emails). The bottom line is that customers need to feel like they have a voice.

    --

Here is one more: Why not have a place where everyone can go to vote for older movies and television shows that they would like to see added? If DIE HARD 3, for example, was one of the more popular requests, then they could try to get that movie added and satisfy more customers this way.

Evolve to survive. That's great advice for Vudu. I can't believe you provided that information for free! I thank you for pointing out your techniques and strategies so that 'Vudu can easily become a great service!' Now they'll have a plan.

It's great information and a good tag line "Evolve to survive". I'm thinking if they don't evolve, other competitors may do it better like Barnes & Noble's coming video service and that's not a bad thing for me at least because all my titles are UV enabled titles allowing me too move freely.

That is by far the best advantage of UV. I was really sick of most services being tied to one platform and I knew that it wouldn't work for me because I change platforms frequently.. But as long as UV thrives, I should no longer have to ever worry in the future.

I also don't like being tied to one platform and not being able to control my content...that is why I switched from iPhone to Andriod a couple of years ago.

...and, I used the word "evolve" because I feel that the VUDU and Walmart guys built this site and decided that EVERYTHING we will ever need is already there and they moved on to other things (or jobs). It's a really good site and really good service, but to compete they are going to have to make enhancements and continue to meet the needs of their customers who are trying to use their service in their homes.

I've only been a user since this month. So I cannot really judge its future on how well it will be supported as I've not been here long enough to know it's history... But I do hope that they evolve the service...

Don't feel bad. None of us customers can judge Vudu's future. Heck, Vudu can't judge Vudu's future. Some of the customers think they hold the key to Vudu's success, and that Vudu will fail without heeding their advice. I'm sure Vudu has a staff of qualified people that can decide for themselves which actions are profitable, and which actions are not. All we as customers can do is to submit requests and wish lists, and hope to get Vudu's attention. I doubt Vudu pays much attention to customer's projected forecasts.

Re: Vudu can easily become a great service!

As with most service providers that are based on technology, what sets a company apart from their competitors is their IT department. I worked for a technology company for a few years and we were very successful because of our ability to quickly adjust to the needs of our customers, because of our ability to easily make enhancements to our systems, and because we had very good communications with our customers (they always knew that we were aware of their issues and they knew what our plan was regarding their "wish list" even if our plan was to do nothing).

I know that their developers cannot just go off and work on whatever they want. And it's possible that they may be working on some of what we are asking for. But I see on this forum that others have been asking for the ability to sort as far back as April of last year. Sorting is really an easy feature to add and communicating with your customers what functionality is being developed and what is being considered for future releases is even easier.

Not a bad idea, but the issue is more or less with licensing... I think if Vudu had it thier way, we would be able to convert any title using the D2D method. However licensing issues don't permit this. Voting could be very useful to provide feedback/data to Vudu which could then be used to give them more leverage to show Studios that there customers have a demand for there products...

Also semi-related but unrelated... Die Hard 4 (Live Free or Die Hard) is the title that is missing from that series that I still need D2D for...

Re: Vudu can easily become a great service!

I am sure that some of the issues is with "licensing", but I also believe that some is simply that they don't know what we want (any many cases they may not care).

I bought one movie on Amazon that VUDU doesn't have and one on VUDU that Amazon doesn't have. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't think that the issue here is licensing with these particular movies. If one can offer online streaming than I would expect all to be able to offer streaming as long as they have the movie to stream. Again, I could be wrong --but it would be the first time ).

And, if licensing is the problem then perhaps this poll could be used as leverage to resolve some of these lecensing issues.

Re: Vudu can easily become a great service!

As far as D2D goes, its dependent on UV licensing and the partners/studios that are in the DECE. D2D is only for titles that support UV. Now as far as there other movie selection goes, I'm sure licensing is a part of it also, but you may be right that its not everything.

On a side note, wouldn't it be nice if everyone just came together and played ball?

Would make things much simpler! My biggest disappointment is with Disney, Apple would be nice, but Disney/Pixar are must in the future.

...like I said, I don't really know. But I do think that they can use our ignorance against us at times.

I hate that Disney and Pixar are not envolved in any of this. We have a couple of Disney movies that we bought just so the kids have them in the cloud, but I don't want to buy ALL our Disney and Pixar titles twice since we already own A BUNCH.
