    The remote

Its not bad once you get used to it, but backlighting would have been nice

I do like the clickable scroll wheel.

The remote is very intuitive. I never need to look at mine so backlighting wouldn't serve any purpose for me since I don't look at the remote.

Back lighting is only for the "beginner" home theater/TV watcher. The Pro's develop tactile memory.

Hey, no discussion of AVN con...oh, never mind.

But really, there is the big honking scroll wheel sticking up, and buttons at the four cardinal directions. Only one direction ("south") has two buttons, and the closest one of those even has a bump for reference. You'll probably get used to it pretty quickly. It takes a little feeling around, but I've gotten used to finding every button on my Harmony by feel, even though it has a backlight (which I leave off to conserve the battery):

              Re: The remote

My VUDU remote suffers from the same reception problems that have been reported elsewhere. I think it must be a design flaw.

Even though I have tried changing remote channels with the dip switches, and increasing/decreasing the sensitivity setting, the remote (especially the wheel) is annoyingly sluggish even at a range of only 8 feet.

I live in downtown Chicago. Perhaps the RF signal needs to be stronger in a location like this to overcome all the other RF traffic. Do any rural customers have these problems?

It could be a problem with your remote. Also check if the antenna is seated properly. Try to take the antenna off and put it back on again.

If that doesn't help, please contact customer service for a replacement.

                Hagen.

I doubt it is a design flaw, I own 3 VUDU remotes, and they all work flawlessly and always have. My guess would be interference in your location from other RF signals present. Maybe VUDU should come out with a RF repeater or something to increase the signal saturation within a home, although the the signal strength may be limited by FCC regulations.

Personally, even so I own a IR receiver for the VUDU box, I still prefer my VUDU remotes, and although I do own a Harmony One, I still love my scroll wheel more. Now if they come out with Harmony remote with a scroll wheel, you would have me sold in a heartbeat.

I have 5. 3 of them work very well and 2 work similar to what the OP described. I think you are right about the FCC thing. I just wish that the remote was a plain old infrared remote similar to the one that comes with the Tivo. Even when it does work, I like the Tivo way of doing FF compared to the scroll wheel. Each click (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) go to an increasing (though consistent) speed. The 4th click (or hitting play) brings it back to normal.

Yeah, I got to admit, I did love my TIVO Remote, while I had my TIVO running, which is now just sitting in a closet, collecting dust. To be honest, I haven't even tried the IR adapter with my Harmony, so I'm not sure how much different it is, but when I use my VUDU remote, I tend to scroll fast, quite often, and I've noticed with a lot of IR remotes, when you scroll up and down there is a lag, which is why I've been hesitant to switch over.

                          Re: The remote

Using the Vudu remote without a left and right buttons is a bit frustrating when using the search feature of youtube. I wonder if the current remote supports has the ability to support double-click. If this was the case then one could use double-click to select a letter and single-click to change the direction that the wheel moves the cursor. e.g. single-click move cursor sideways... single-click again move cursor up and down. Clicking another key to get the same change of direction, if double-click is not supported, could also do the trick. Of course this behavior would only be supported when the cursor is in certain areas of the Vudu UI. In the future, it would be nice if the a "new" remote had a wheel just like the wheel of many Logitech mice which have the ability to also move the cursor sideways. I'm sure there are patens attached to this functionality, but it would be nice to move the cursor up/down and sideways with just the wheel.

Have you tried a keyboard...here is a thread that discusses the use of a USB keyboard and the VUDU:

                              Re: The remote

I've had my vudu for a couple of weeks now. My only issue with the remote is the battery door. I have a really hard time getting it on and off...it is just too snug of a fit and I'm afraid I'm going to break it.

I had to replace the batteries as part of a trouble shooting exercise the first week and I got it lined up pretty good but I was going to have to force it shut to get it 100% closed. It is rubber-banded in place at this point because I was afraid it would break if I pressed harder. Other than there being a rubber band wrapped around the remote battery door, this solution actually works out pretty good.

For those with reception issues, you can increase/decrease the remote sensitivity on the vudu box under advanced settings.
