Out of luck renting "old" movies... Will they ever be back?

Tomorrow I'm going to the movies and most likely I'll watch Underworld: Rise Of the Lycans. I was disappointed to see that both of the previous Underworld movies were not available to rent. Were they ever available for rent? I'm a new Vudu owner, so pardon my ignorance if this has been asked before. I searched a little bit, but did not an answer.

I understand that the rules vary from studios to studio... but... do movies in the Vudu catalog that at one point were available for rent and for purchase ever return to catalog as available for rent? Will any of the Underworld movies be available for rent ever again... and if so, what are the determining factors that make this happen?

It would be nice if a few weeks before the release of a sequel to a blockbusters movie the prequel(s) were advertized to Vudu users and if there is enough interest Vudu can use this interest as leverage to negotiate with the studios. I know, I know... it is not that simple... mostly up to the studios... Indulge me... what if there was a way for Vudu to advertize the prequel(s) for movie x, coming out in y number of weeks and if enough users vote (or pre-paid rentals) some time before time z... Vudu goes to the studio and guarantee x dollars to the studios to make the movie available for a predetermined time. Don't shot me... is just some thoughts... I'm rambling here incoherently... I just had a couple Stone Ruination IPAs

I think that's a great idea. It would have been really sweet to have all 3 of the Indiana Jones movies on Vudu before Crystal Skull was released in theaters.

Old movies do come back though right? It'd be nice to be able to watch something like 300 or gladiator on a whim, something I"ve seen before, liked, but don't want to take the time to get it from netflix.

It's hard to say, it may or may not be. And it may be purchase only.

About a year ago, I started to watch the movie, "The Lives of Others." I didn't finish and always planned on renting it at another time. Then it went out of the catalog. Now it is back but it's purchase only. It seems like some studios offer rentals for a short period of time, then the movie leaves, and when it comes back it's purchase only. And that is a real bummer.

Other examples of this right now are There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, Rambo, etc. Heck, Rambo was one of the first HDX titles and now it's SD only for purchase only. From a customer perspective it's maddening...

I really believe Vudu's value (currently at least) is an ultra-convenient rental medium. IMO, they really have to maintain a very high percentage of rental titles in order to remain relevant. If a movie is so good I want to own it, I'm going to go out and buy the disc (external storage with HDX purchase at a lower price than a $25 to $30 blu-ray disc could change my mind though).

Exactly!... Convenient for the rental of new and old titles.

Maybe I have not looked in the right places, but how can I find out how long a movie is going to remain available for rental in the catalog? If I had this info it would allow me to prioritize the viewing of the titles that are going to be removed first. Likewise, if the a movie is going to be available "again" for rental after it has departed from the catalog. Having a "Comming Back on... date here" notice in the catalog would be nice.

As bald mentioned above, the way for Vudu to built a large user base and to remain a viable business is going to be rentals. Sales of titles will then grow out of the rentals user base.

Currently this doesn't exist to my knowledge. I suggested it a couple days ago, but I imagine it may be yet another limitation imposed by the studios? I'm not sure if Vudu even knows when titles are coming back. So far no one "official" has weighed in.

The Lives of Others is a great film. I have the R2 steelbook DVD but would love to see back in the catalouge as rental on Vudu.

Let me ask everyone a question. I know a lot of the posters on this forum use Cable PPV options. Are any services actually showing the above movies? And if not why has hasn't say, Lionsgate made The Lives of Others retable again?

Some how Vudu knows when is time to remove them from or put them back in the catalog. Any business agreement with time constrains... that my lawyer would allow me to sign... would require some reasonable notice to execute the timed restrains therein. Maybe Vudu knows from day one, for new releases, as the mighty studios would want to make sure that the movie is only available for rental for a specific period of time. Then the studios notify them when certain titles are back available for rental. Vudu picks the titles it wants and returns the signed agreement with the outlined time constrains that they agree to pay for the specific titles they picked. But who knows... it just feels like the blind leading the blind and those of us with sight end up in the dark.

...which is exactly why the current method of distribution is dieing a slow death. The powers that be don't yet understand that consumers hold the power now; not them.

Music is a bit father along than video but it will catch up fast and both will move to a model of universal availability. Recall when the allofmp3 model was such a shock? Now it seems much less so.

I used to use Cable PPV, but I found that between Vudu for movies and AppleTV or Boxee or Amazon on my Tivos for TV shows that I just wasn't using PPV on the cable box. So I gave it back to Comcast and saved myself the $10 a month or whatever it costs now days...
