Re: More Competitive Pricing to Come?

    Glennvudu,

I agree with you completely that the 24 hour viewing window is untenable. It is probably the most annoying aspect of the product. I think it is the number one customer improvement request.

Right now, it's not anything Vudu can do anything about. The studios all have this policy and it's across all VOD providers. The AppleTV has an interesting wrinkle that may open the door for Vudu to offer longer viewing periods. With the AppleTV if you pause your rental and don't leave it, you can view that rental more than 24 hours later. If you leave the movie, you are warned that it will be deleted immediately. You are given a chance to go back and finish watching.

So if one product can do that, there is then wiggle room for Vudu to argue for the same rights. Wether or not that happens, I can't say, but I think it's a good compromise that would solve the issue for 90% of us.

As for selling a subscription to an online movie vault that would be a disaster recover/backup - that's a great idea!

We ran into this situation the other day where we actually waited 3 hours to rent the movie so that is was late enough in the weekday evening so if we couldn't finish it we would have enough time the next day to get through it. That isn't convenient - given that I could have run to Blockbuster picked up the blu-ray disc and had it for a couple of days - no problem - no hassle - no worries.
This is really only true if you usually don't watch movies in one sitting. If that is the case, then I completely agree with you. While we sometimes run into this (mostly my wife because she watches movies while she works out), we deal with it. Most of the time, however, we watch the movie immediately and have 22 hours left that we never use. So for most of our usages, Vudu is way more convenient than any of your first 3 choices.

If Vudu got AppleTV-like workaround for 24-hr watching period, I'd be ecstatic!

Can you elaborate? I must have missed what AppleTV is doing differently on this?

I posted a whole thread on it, Justin. Bottom line with ATV is that if you are in a movie (watching or paused) when the rental period expires, you can continue watching it. So if you paused it before the expiration and come back 3 days later, you can finish watching. If you leave the movie, you will be warned that the movie will be deleted immediately if you continue and it gives you the option of going back to finish.

I hope Vudu is able to adopt this strategy.

              Ah, sorry, missed that.

That would be a good policy, and if Apple can get away with it then hopefully it can be implemented here too.
