    Re: Will they take HD-DVD's?

I converted 2 hd dvd's for the $2 price. I explained I was on the wrong side of the format war but they were HD quality.

Is it just me or does anyone else think it's strange that we haven't heard from any Vudu forum moderator/engineer on this issue at all?

My guess and it is only a guess-

Officially, they are not allowed to take HD-DVD's. The program is only for DVD's and Blu-Ray.

However, they are turning a blind eye to stores that are willing to take them as there are very few of us out there.

I only had about ten HD-DVD's. Five of them were the free rebate ones that I wasn't interested in replacing. Five where purchased by me. Of the five, one I didn't want again, three were purchased by me in Blu-Ray. That left only one that I had Wal-Mart convert to HD for $5.

I didn't try to get it for $2 for two reasons. One I was satisfied with paying $5. Two, the title wasn't available in Blu-Ray so there was no way to get it for $2.

The poster who paid $2 for the HD had movies that listed as Blu-Ray copies.

I think vudu/uv has little to do with the in store part of it. I'm pretty sure I could have taken DVDs and blu rays that didn't match my list and they would have just hit the button on thier screen and given them to me. It's probably just lack of training/caring on the employees parts.

The "they" that I was writing about was this forum's moderators that lujan's post stated didn't answer this thread's original question.

You are absolutely right that the problem is "just lack of training/caring on the employees parts".

My point is no one official will answer the orignal poster's question in this thread. They are turning a blind eye to us posters.

              Re: Will they take HD-DVD's?

The OP asked if anyone has tried to take HD DVDs in. That's a question directed to customers, not Vudu. Anyone interested can get an answer rather easily: just take one in to Walmart, and see what they tell you.

I was this walmart's photo center 1st customer for the disc to digital service.
She asked me to be patient since she was new to even trying this. I sold all my hd dvd collection except for those 2 movies so the rest of my conversions will be blu ray or dvd. I guess I got lucky I did have a copy of one of the hd dvd's in dvd format just in case they would not accept the hd dvd version.

                  Re: Will they take HD-DVD's?

Went to another Walmart and brought just the discs in the slim jewell cases with my list and they took the HD-DVD's, and converted them to HDX, no questioned asked. My mom took some of her HD-DVD's to a different Walmart yesterday and the lady did the HD-DVD's in HDX, saying that HD is HD.

Wonder if they'll take my CED videodiscs and laserdiscs? Or D-VHS movies?

                      Re: Will they take HD-DVD's?

HD DVD is certainly more like Blu-ray than DVD, both Blu-ray and HD DVD are high definition formats read by a blue laser. DVD is a red laser format and not high definition. I am only interested in converting HD DVD to Vudu HDX at $2 a disc and if that works, I am certainly excited about this program.

                        Re: Will they take HD-DVD's?

I have a dozen HD-DVD disks that I have made a list for online using the Blu-ray versions. My plan is to to take them to a Walmart tonight and see what happens.

I wonder if I would have better luck with them in red cases or just on a spindle.

                        UPDATE:
The whole thing couldn't have been more painless. The clerk was doing this for the first time so he got some help from another employee. He verified my printed list matched the cases in bag I had them all in. He then went to the computer with the other employee and they were there for a minute or two, not long at all. He then rang me up while the other stamped all of the disks.

Not a word was said about them being HD-DVD disks and not Blu-ray. I suspect their either didn't know any better or didn't care enough to think about it. I wonder if the results would have been different had we done the manual form instead of me doing it online.

When the guy did mine manually he put in the UPC and the computer told him $5 for HDX so I did the list ahead of time like you at a different Walmart and had no problems.

Bingo for me as well on these.

The key seems to be printing out your list from home and choose your HD-DVD movies as if they were Blu-Ray (so it lists them as Blu-Ray)

I even forgot my Goodfellas disc (didn't realize it wasn't in the case) and she pushed it on through and told me just to bring the disc back out later so she could stamp it. I live in a small town and this type of thing isn't unusual, and frankly good customer service from my viewpoint.

If anyone out there still cares, I just brought in some HD-DVD's by themselves (no cases), along with my printed list from the website, and was able to get the HDX versions for $2. Used the blu-ray versions on the list. Wal-mart is awesome like that...

2 disc sets require you to bring in both discs.... kind of odd, since you don't get the special features on vudu anyway...
