so will anyone buy discs anymore?

Bestbuy is having the "upgrade and save" program again where you trade in a dvd and get $5 towards a bluray above $9.99.

I have a few i would like to trade in such as Crouching Tiger, last samurai and Blade 1/2. But these movies also are available via D2D albeit without 5.1 audio. So i could get each of these for $5 or pay $5 for D2D.

What would you do or are going to do? I tempted to just go to BB because i dont know whether my entire collection will ever be available to D2D and i really dont want to have my collection spread across multiple sources in varying formats. Right now i just rip them all to my server.

thanks for pointing out that Blade 1 & 2 are not 5.1. I thought they were. Now I will be picking them up at Best Buy with upgrade and save.

I think it would depend on your sound needs. I live in a condo so while I have a surround set up, 2.1 wouldn't bother me as much as it would if I lived in a big house with built in surround.

I live in an apartment and it sure enough bothers me in my 13x13 living room

I would like to go all digital and only buy UV movies but the cost seems a bit high plus the uncertainty of it being HD or HD with 5.1 is holding me back.

Not that I disagree (and these have been reported to our content team to request 5.1 audio source from the studios) but are you using Dolby Pro Logic on your receiver?

The DD2.0 (ie. "stereo") audio is (except for very old movies) Pro Logic encoded, so if your receiver decodes Pro Logic you will at least get a decent center channel and mono surround...

My receiver, Pioneer 1018 is set to auto-decode. It switches and displays the stream it is receiving.

Ok, with PCM 2.0 input just make sure it's in "movie mode", "Pro Logic", etc - I'm not sure Pro Logic is something it can auto-detect, since it's an analog encoding of surround over the L/R stereo channels. A receiver like the Pioneer can sound pretty good even with Pro Logic surround

So on the best buy upgrade and save thing what does it mean " A recycling receipt must accompany the coupon at time of redemption." does that mean that in addition to bringing in DVDs I have to recycle something else with them?

No they are recycling the DVDs. When you give them your DVD's at Customer Service, they give you a coupon/receipt the take them to the normal checkout register when you pick the blu-rays you want. However, whenever I go they skip the coupon and let me do both at once at the CS, but YMMV.

I also do everything in one swoop. Pick out some movies to buy then head to CS and tradein, redeem, pay and keep walking .

Streaming is useless over my "broadband" connection. The only UV movies I use are ones downloaded overnight to my iPad for use the next day... so I will personally continue purchasing discs for the foreseeable future.

I tend to think that some broadband providers (*cough Time Warner cough*) Are keeping their speeds slow in an effort to reduce streaming... here in San Antonio TWC has upgraded to Docsis 3 and could easily support provide the 50mbps that Austin TX gets for 30 bucks a month... but no... I'm still at 15 mbps and paying 45/month... also TWC is again trying to start usage based billing with a 5 gig cap and a dollar for every gig after that.... does anyone else smell an anti-trust suit brewing?
