I transcribed a quote from the video since it deals with the topic of this thread.

Talking is Jim Taylor, Head of Technology & Product Development, DECE / UV.

He is speaking of the sale of UV redemption codes on ebay:
"I am not a lawyer, so I wont address the question if it is legal or not, but the interesting thing to me is the view point that I take is anything that helps consumers build a library of content is a good thing.

That is part of the reason that the studios have embraced WalMart's Disc-to-Digital program and some other programs, at pretty low cost. For $2, I can take a dvd I actually bought used at a store for $1 then bring it into the UltraViolet system.

Part of the reason for that is the studios realize that once consumers get kind of a critical mass of an UltraViolet collection, that is what will drive them to buying more content and new content often at full price.

So, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Again, I am not speaking for UltraViolet nor as a lawyer, officially, but you think that there is a demand for the codes. That the prices are being driven up on ebay. That it is helping people build content.

So as long as it doesn't get out of hand, you can actually look at it as a good thing for the ecosystem. That there is interest. That people want to buy the codes. That they want to build their libraries.

Just like, you know, when we were all teenagers taping songs off of the radio for free, eventually we all became consumers and we paid for albums and CDs and everything else. All that kind of behavior on the fringes of the system can actually be good for the system.
              "

I think the question in this thread about the re-sale of a DVD or Bluray which has been brought into the UV system through the D2D program can be said to be technically illegal, but in the drive to reach "critical mass" it is doubtfull anyone would ever be brought to account. Instead, I think it would be considered another "fringe" behavior which may actually be good for the ecosystem in this initial phase where the single goal is a drive for critical mass.

As Mr. Taylor says, if it "gets out of hand" it may need be delt with l8tr.

Above is the transcribed quote. The thread is CLICK HERE

BTW, I listened to the whole new webinar. Not a lot of new info. Still nice to listen too an updated UV status forum.

A week from now, MESA is holding another Ultra-Violet seminar in London. They should announce updated numbers. I am hoping for 15 million accounts.

I'd like some detailed info. In particular, what is the average number of movies an account has. I know they have access to this level of data, so out with it.

The number of accounts does not, imho, give anything particularly useful, and I wouldn't recommend using that to gauge the success of UV. Think about it; millions of people create accounts on sites that they never use again.

If they say 20 million accounts, but the average size is less than 5 movies, there's a problem. However, if the announce 10 million accounts, but the average size is greater than 50, that means those who are signing up are likely continuing to feed cash into the system. And that is the kind of data that will pressure the folks at Disney.

I am looking forward to this info too. Thx EP.

BTW, IMHO the best metric for how much the UV ecosystem is gaining acceptance is not the number of members. It is also not how many titles the median member has in their digital locker.

For me the metric most telling is the high water mark of simultaneous playbacks during the past 24 hour period. This would say, not how many people have signed up or how many titles the average user has, but instead how many people are using the system to watch content.

That to me is a much more accurate reflection of product acceptance. Kinda like a nelson rating for UV as a virtual channel.

...strong increase in viewing among UltraViolet account holders
this is encouraging at least. I do believe the mark of success with UV is not the number of account holders they can boast, but the number of people using it on a daily basis.

As I suspected with it gaining consumer acceptance, the numbers are increasing of people who have UV accounts actually using it. This is a big sea change from people just trying it for a novelty and then discarding it.
