    Advantages of UltraViolet

In the last year I have seen a lot of negative comments from posters on blogs and on amazon.com about the UltraViolet system. A lot of the commenters are simply uninformed about how how UV works, so I have decided to start a new thread to bust the misconceptions. Please feel free to add any comments to this thread! Thanks.

Pros: portability; the fact that i can just turn on a system, tap a couple buttons and play any movie; having my entire library available at the tap of a button without changing discs. Discs can get lost, stolen, scratched, etc..plus BDs take a long time to load on most players, you have to skip through previews, menus, etc.

Cons: Compressed audio on some films (depending on service used); No internet connection= no streaming, streaming takes up most of my bandwidth; A few of the greatest films ever made are not available on UV (and may not ever be)

I like having both the BD and UV copies, but eventually I'll get rid of my discs because they take up space. Never understood why people knocked UV, it only gives them greater accessibility to films.

If Vudu is primarily a streaming service, how is it a con it can't be used without streaming? That's like saying a con to owning a refrigerator is having to have electricity.

I have very little against UltraViolet as a platform/service. The only real limitation that annoys me slightly is the limit of 5 downloads of a title over its lifetime. I'd much rather a time period limitation set instead, for example say only able to download any given title once in every 2 years or something similar. I know we can stream an unlimited amount of times but that is a slightly different issue.

Otherwise I think UV and VUDU itself is simply outstanding. Hopefully if Disney don't ever join UV (Which I would love to see) then at least I hope they create a similar setup, one that again ties into VUDU etc fine. (At the end of the day what's one more account to sign up for and link to really.) Infact, forget UV, I'd be happy if Disney could just be persuaded to just do Disc to Digital!

Jeff, the topic here is not Vudu, rather, it is UV. UV is touted to be much more than streaming, it is security through multiple options; the ability to get a physical copy of your licensed content, to download licensed content for offline viewing and safekeeping, and to stream the licensed content...for me it is the knowledge that, should I lose my physical copy (for things I D2D) I can make a replacement legally, making iffy copyright laws regarding how I store and view my media moot.

UV beats the standard "Digital Copy" in almost every way. The hassle of choosing between WMV or iTunes, both highly proprietary containers with limited playback options (yes, I have devices that will play back each, but the device I'm building my home cinema around supports neither), is eliminated. I think the apprehension of many people will be solved with the CFF rollout, a more 'tangible' digital version that can be transfered to multiple devices. Of course iTunes fanatics will still not be happy with studios only giving UV codes (neither would I if I had 100s of movies already on iTunes). The multiple-DRM integration in the CFF and the companies involved will give old Apple a run for our money...and people who continue to buy at iTunes may find themselves left out of some great portability options, like watching your collection on anything other than an Apple product or a PC.

1 con is the different studios handling the redeeming process and issues with them playing the blame game. Mainly talking about Flixster. I hate redeeming through Flixster because I get error messages and their support sucks. Its been well over 6 months, maybe a year since they have been no help to me. Even pointed me to UV support a few times when their service is the only one that my movies don't show up on. I have a couple movies that can only be viewed through Flixster with Watchmen Ultimate Cut being one of them. It shows in my UV locker but never been able to view on Flixster. Plus my Flixster never updates with new movies I redeem, even ones redeemed through Flixster itself. Flixster is about the only issue I have with UV at the moment.
