    Re: Disney Ultraviolet

I haven't seen any Disney movies that include vudu digital copies, but have seen some from MGM.

I do not own any, but this is what I read in one place. I am pretty sure I read same kinda thing elsewhere too, but I can't find my way back there just now.

I did think it was common knowledge that Disney was doing this on a select basis.

        Here is a quote from a survey recently conducted by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment;

"50 percent stated that they would prefer purchasing a UV-enabled disc title over one that wasn't. This particular response reflects back to the fact that consumers in general are at the crux of physical and digital forms of entertainment. Offering both to users gives them the freedom to indulge in both."

Disney is sure to know about this too and also know that just offering iTunes downloads puts them at a competitive disadvantage.

As far as I know that deal was exclusive to Toy Story 3, and was the only Disney title that got that type of promotion.

IC. First you knew of no Disney titles. I find one and now you say this is the only one.

If I find another will you say those are the only two, and so on, and so on....?

I've known about the Toy Story 3 promotion for quite a while. But I believe that ended before UltraViolet was announced. What I meant was that I knew of no current ones. But if you can find any others, please post it here, I would probably pick one up if it was a movie I don't have.

MGM has several UV titles and several available for D2D. Just recently a couple of MGM titles that I have been waiting on for D2D were listed as UV, although they are not yet available for D2D. But they do still have MANY titles that are not UV. Hurry up MGM!!!

You also may be right in that some studios may never allow their older movies to be available for D2D, or perhaps they are going to wait until the Blu-ray is made available or some anniversary edition and some time after that release date they may allow D2D. I hate having to wait...what I hate just as much is not being able to see any listing of new releases for UV and D2D. And if some studios NEVER allow D2D then I guess I am okay with that also. There are ways to convert your disc to digital and stream it over your own network if you really wanted to. I also don't have any problems with sticking a disc in my DVD or Blu-ray player and watching my movies. I will do that forever before I will purchase all my remaining MGM movies and Disney movies again.

Well let?s see?the new release Red Dawn and Bond film Skyfall are both UV titles. As far as MGM titles that are available for D2D, I have found that several of the old Elvis movies are available. Movies like Viva Las Vegas, Jailhouse Rock, Girl Happy, Kissin? Cousins. I was thinking that more of the Elvis movies were MGM, but maybe not.

Another classic MGM film that is available for D2D is The Philadelphia Story. I recently added that to my locker.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Zookeeper are newer titles available for D2D. Other titles include Yours, Mine, and Ours, Gymkata, and Poltergeist.

Something that I didn?t really think about until now is that perhaps some of the titles I see as MGM may simply be distributed by MGM for other studios. The distribution thing really gets confusing to me.

That, and when the rights have changed hands, is confusing...then there are the wholly owned subsidieries, like Touchstone and Hollywood for Disney, and United Artists for MGM, which add more titles to our unavailable lists.

Here is a scary thought...what would happen if MGM or Disney were to buy some major studio for which we have already acquired digital rights to? Is it possible that we would loose those titles from our UV locker? My understanding is that our license doesn't expire, but I have never received anything stating what my rights or or what restrictions may apply when I spend my $2.00 for disc-to-digital or when I buy a movie from VUDU.

I think that is mildly addressed in the UV ToS, or at least their FAQ page.

It kind of already happened. When Disc to Digital first came out last year Disney was in the process of acquiring Marvel rights but Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, and Captain America were all available on D2D for a very short time. Luckily I didn't wait and I converted them all and they went to my UV account. I was kind of surprised they were there in the first place but then only a few days after I converted them they disappeared from D2D then dropped off of Vudu. They were also removed from my Ultraviolet account (but not Vudu) until I protested and they were all put back except Thor for some reason. I tried to get Thor back and was mostly given the run around and it is still not back on UV but it still shows on Flixster (as one Flixster can't play) but not Cinema Now. They all show the UV symbol on my Vudu account including including Thor. So I guess it is a legitimate concern if it turns out like it did with Thor for me.

Hmmm.... Iron Man: Rise of the Technovore is an Ultraviolet title... I thought Disney wasn't doing UV.
