REPORT: Soon Everyone Will Be Using UltraViolet To Watch Movies On-The-Go

Published today (February 27, 2013) on Business Insider:

Soon Everyone Will Be Using UltraViolet To Watch Movies On-The-Go By Kirsten Acuna

    [Excerpt]

If you've purchased a DVD in the past few months, you've probably noticed a small sticker in the lower right hand corner of the film box telling you to try out Ultraviolet (UV).

Inside, you'll see a single sheet of purple and yellow paper with a confirmation code pointing you toward an UltraViolet site.

    Here's what it's all about.

UltraViolet service allows you to take your film collection with you on the go. It's an authentication system that verifies film purchases and enables you to watch your movies across any mobile device from any location.

We spoke with the mind behind UltraViolet, Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) president and chief digital strategy officer at Sony Pictures, Mitch Singer, to find out more about the creation of UV and why this is the next frontier for movie viewing.

"The motion picture industry has basically decided, given the technological advances, that it doesn't make any sense in a digital world to force consumers to buy the same movie over and over again," Singer tells Business Insider.

"We know we're in a cloud environment, so, if we could create an environment where no matter where you are in the world, you just put in your credentials, the device or service you happen to be on looks in the cloud, sees what movies you have in your collection, populates the screen for you, and now you can watch any movie you want."

    -- DECE president, Mitch Singer

    BEST QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE:

"The service isn't new at all; Ultraviolet's been around since late 2011. However, it's been picking up steam in the past few months.

As of Super Bowl weekend, the service has reached 10 million registered users."

    10 MILLION USERS!

I am sure Disney is aware of these numbers.

I have noticed some strange changes over on UVVU.

      Like the "Our Players Tab"

And then the new look of how services are linked.

Oh and the really dumb change how we can only have a constant link for 2 Vudu accounts but can have 1 main and 5 sub user account.

The message to take from the article published today by Business Insider is that Ultraviolet registrations are taking off.

I had no idea UVVU has 10 million users!!!!!!

With numbers of this magnitude it's no wonder why we are seeing so many disc releases with Ultraviolet copies.

It's no wonder we are seeing early digital releases.

It seems the overall motion picture industry is embracing UV and doing all it can to BOOST awareness and recruit even more users.

How long will Disney wait before joining Ultraviolet? Six months? One year? It's just a matter of time.

Yeah I did a quick glance through, and I'm assuming that's how they are going to get around the whole change they just made to where only 2 VUDU accounts can have the constant link.

If you have a player and then each UV user just logs in via their UV username they are in the end going to be able to pull right from UV and not have to make sure that link is there between VUDU and UV?

Disney has been in bed with Apple since Steve Jobs returned to Apple. I don't see Apple/iTunes relinquishing its hold on Disney Digital copy any time soon

Umm, no offense or disrespect but Steve Jobs is dead. Apple/iTunes does not have a HOLD on Disney. But they might have an exclusivity agreement in place that will eventually expire.

Yes, there is a strong partnership between Apple-Pixar-Disney, but Disney has already made TWO failed attempts to launch its own streaming digital service -- without Apple/iTunes.

In my opinion (and I admit this is just wild speculation), the only way Disney will NOT join UV is if Disney buys Apple. Don't think it's impossible. No one would ever have imagined that Disney would buy ABC, but it did.

                    The point? Never say never.

Disney will sniff out all sources for increased revenue.

The reporter who penned the article did say UV has "been picking up steam in the past few months."

Big numbers and fast growth for UV will be good for the entire industry and help to further crack the once-impenetrable iTunes stronghold on streaming media.

Considering Apple has more *cash* in the bank than Disney's market cap, if it ever happens it would be the reverse

Good point - LOL! Perhaps a merger of Apple and Disney is more within the realm of my vivid imagination.

In all seriousness, 10 million registers UV users cannot fly under Disney's radar. It has to catch Disney's attention.

This may be a dumb question, but what does it actually mean? Players=devices??? I've tried figuring out how to register my devices and am striking out.

But because of the silly 5 device limit, divide that 10 million by 3 imo. There are a lot of people with more than 1 vudu account! It's still a big number but it is not a unique user number.
